Initially, we found that we had to angle the Anova on the pot just right so that the circulating blades didn't contact the metal housing. As you can imagine, it makes noise and will reduce the life of the motor. The problem (see my uploaded pictures) is that the shaft is not centered. It looks like it was designed to be centered, but then they added a metal hose clamp to attach one metal rod to the heating element (see pic). This configuration pulls the whole shaft at an angle and makes it a very narrow opening on one side for the circulating shaft / blades. The clicking has gotten intolerable with use. I contacted Anova and days later got a response that they wanted to bring my unit in for diagnosis. I sent them a response with questions and days later, no response. ***Update - one week later, Anova finally responded and sent a replacement. The new unit has worked as designed for several weeks.
The app is a moving target. I've had this unit only a couple of weeks and have had three versions of the iPhone app. Which is great because they've fixed most of the problems people are complaining about in the other reviews, and bad because I have to reconnect the WiFi each time they do that and it always takes 2-3 tries.
As of this writing you can do a few things with the app. You can see the temperature. You can set the temp and start the unit. I've actually used this to pre-heat the water so it was already hot by the time I got home. It's actually talking to a server somewhere so you can do this out in the world - your phone doesn't have to be on Wifi, it just needs to be on the Internet. There's also a timer although I just use the regular phone timer.
They just in the last day or two added features to help manage actually leaving the food in the bath all day and starting cooking at work so it's done when you get home without dying horribly from all the bacteria growing in the meantime. They have instructions (frozen food and lots of ice) and you can set it up to notify you if the temperature enters the bacteria danger zone. In that case you would probably just start cooking the food a bit early - there's usually a pretty big window in cooking sous vide style so it shouldn't be any big deal. This appears to be a fairly workable approach but I'd try it a few times with cheaper meat to make sure it's 100% reliable and to know how long your ice lasts before sticking in your prime grade ribeye, you know?
