As suggested by some other owners i did buy a "dumb" battery charger, the kind you have to unplug when your batteries are supposed to be full. After charging all the batteries that the Ansmann charger labeled "defective" i put them in the cheapest toy i could find that runs on those batteries and all but one were indeed not working. The one that did was put into the Ansmann and it did its magic and charged them completely. So when the smart charger wont charge some batteries they really are broke and need to be thrown away.
I have used it about 10 times since I purchased it, which comes out to around 160-200 battery recharges (10 uses x 16 to 20 batteries). It seems to do a great job charging batteries.
Until about 2 months ago. Upon completion of charging the last round of batteries, I noticed that one of the batteries completed its cycle with a blinking red status, and was very hot to the touch. I figured that was a fluke (bad battery), disposed of the battery, and forgot about it.
Used it again yesterday with 6 Eneloop AA batteries, and the batteries all completed the charging cycle with blinking red status and were all extremely hot to the touch. The bottom of the charger was also extremely hot.
I'm giving this a one-star review as I consider this to be a safety hazard. Perhaps I'm wrong, but the batteries might have exploded or caught fire. I happened to set the charger on a heat-resistant surface, but it was also hot enough to have burnt some surfaces.
When this charger worked, it was great - and worked as advertised. Unfortunately, it did not work for very long. One day it decided not to work anymore and while looking up how to repair/replace this charger I came across all the terrible reviews for it's durability. I should have done more research.
I wound up purchasing a Maha Powerex Wizard One MH-C9000 charger and a Tenergy TN141 2 Bay 9V Smart Charger as replacements. I am very pleased with them. The 9V charger is simple and compact and the Powerex has a lot of features and is solidly built. I've had both of those chargers for several times longer than I had a working Ansmann 8 Plus and the only thing I can't do is recharge my D-batteries. I've actually been very happy with Sanyo Eneloop AA batteries with D-cell adaptors as an alternative.
I haven't done some of the testing that others have done (like putting in alkaline batteries) to test all of the failure modes of this device. But I will try those when I have a chance and update this review. For now this a 5 star product if you don't mind the relatively high price. I haven't tried 9v, C or D cells yet, but I appreciate the versatility.
The unit does stay slightly warm even when not charging, so I guess it is drawing some power. I'd like to measure that, and will update this review if/when I do so.
For those who equate country of origin with quality: This appears to have been designed in Germany, but was manufactured in China.
Update 1/15/2011: A year later and this unit has performed flawlessly. A feature I have come to appreciate from this charger over time is its ability to diagnose rechargeables which have failed. This is indicated by a blinking red light when the battery is plugged in. So far, across 30 or so batteries, I discovered that three of a set of four older Rayovac rechargeable cells had failed (I'm sure the fourth will go soon). Assuming the diagnosis is accuration, this is a big time and aggravation saver.
