Give your children the gift of nature with the Ant Hill from Insect Lore. This kit is the first ant habitat designed like the real thing. The dome-shaped, see-through home offers a crosscut view, so kids can easily view ants burrowing and tunneling through the sand and foraging for food above ground. This kit comes with a coupon to send away for live ants through the mail, and it is recommended for kids ages six and up with adult supervision.
Watch the ants burrow, tunnel, and eat! View larger.
When you redeem your mail-in coupon, a vial of 25 harvester ants will be sent to you. These ants are gathered by ant wranglers in the hills of the American Southwest.
Insect Lore does not recommend using ants from your backyard--the Ant Hill is designed especially to keep harvester ants enclosed. Care must be taken with harvester ants, as their bites may cause stinging and swelling. Adult supervision is advised.

The fun begins once you receive your ants and put them into the Ant Hill. The included special sand makes ants feel right at home. Just like they do in the wild, the ants will dig through the sand to create an interesting network of burrows and tunnels, and they will emerge at the top of the hill to forage for food and water.
The Ant Hill's transparent, crosscut design lets you see the inside of the hill from top to bottom, so you can get the best view of your ants' hard work.
Have Fun Caring for Your Ants
In addition to watching ants build tunnels, children will love caring for the ants and feeding them fresh fruits and vegetables. A little bit of food goes a long way--you only need a popcorn kernel-sized morsel of an apple or carrot to feed 25 ants for three days. To keep your ants healthy, you will also need to give them a few drops of fresh water every few days.
Harvester ants will live for two to four weeks in the Ant Hill.

Top customer reviews
After reading some of the negative reviews, I started to worry that this product would not be very good. But let me address some of the concerns:
-Yes, this is much bigger than a traditional ant farm. It has a front part to it as you can see where you don't put any sand. If you follow the directions, you only put sand in the back. Some reviewers were upset that they said their ants would only stay in the front part. I suspect some of these reviewers wrote their review prematurely. You need to give your ants about 24 full hours to get "settled." The manual says that they will be "lazy" upon arrival. They definitely huddle around the front part, and I started to worry that they wouldn't figure out where to dig. Give it time- they will.
-The top opening part, at first, does not seem as secure as one would want with ants. But I have realized it is not a problem. The ants they send you are large harvester ants. They will not get through if you keep the lid shut. With that said, I've also never seen the ants climb to the top (it seems that plastic is very slippery). The manual does warn that sometimes ants put their excess sand in a pile by the opening, and so you may have to use the sand stick (enclosed with it) to push the sand to the side. We have not had that happen.
-Advice: When you get the manual, you will get the mailer to order ants. Yes, it is an extra $4 or $7 (depending on how many ants you select), but it is that way with many ant farm products. It took us about 4 weeks to get ours so plan accordingly. I HIGHLY SUGGEST the large size of ants (it sends 50) because this is a large product. You will get better results.
-Why I like this better than a traditional ant farm: Once they are really established, and have started tunneling, they become "protective" of the tunnels. When you open the lid, the ants will scurry around like crazy with some of them running up and down the "ant hill" part. I think that's neat to see- you wouldn't see that in a traditional ant farm. Also- it helps children relate this with the actual "ant hills" they may see in their backyard. It is more of a 3D kind of understanding of how ant hills work.
Overall, highly recommend. Really read the manual with it as it is very detailed and gives excellent advice.
