Product Description
The AntLion ModMic is an attachable boom microphone that can be attached to any headphone with space to fit the half-inch circle base of the clasp. The clasp is simply attached to the headphone surface (plastic/metal/mesh) by a strong 3M adhesive foam. The mic clasp then attaches and detaches using the low-profile, patent-pending, magnetic NeoClasp. Customizing the ModMic's length and shape can be done with twist of the clasp's ratcheting cap or a simple bend of the steel-reinforced boom. The 3.5 meter (11.5 feet) long cable gives you the freedom to move and connect anywhere in your area (Velcro tie included for unused slack). When not in use, the mic can be removed and attached to any ferrous metal surface like your computer case, screw, table leg, etc.. The ModMic comes with two (2) magnetic 3M foam bases so that you can add the boom mic to multiple headsets. Pattern: Omnidirectional Response: 30 Hz–17.5 kHz ± 3 dB Sensitivity: -26 ± 3 dB SNR: 58+ dB Impedance: 2.2 K-ohms Max current at 2.0V: 500 µA Max input SPL: 110 dB Boom Length: ~5 inches (stock), ~6 inches (maximum length) Clasp Height: 0.5 inches (attached), 0.2 inches (detached) Microphone Weight (mic and clasp): 4 grams Total Weight (mic, clasp, and cable): 20 grams **Mac Users: unless you are sure you have a powered mic input (or iMic) this will probably not work on your Mac. ***Modify Your Headphones. UPDATE 2: I have contacted Antlion about the cable and boom attachment and they were very helpful in reassuring me that the cables thinness is very deceptive and that I should not be worried. They are working on other configurations bc of demand to see certain features included that have all been mentioned here. It's been 6 days now and after constant switching of my headphones for certain uses of the Antlion mic I have not noticed any problems concerning my opinion on the cable, basically I am very happy with this mic and am continuing to recommend it to any and all of my gamer friends. This mic is a beast! BTW ppl for this thing being constantly sold out I would expect more reviews (bc it's that good) to try and get the word out, I normally don't do reviews just bc all I buy are games but something like this deserves to be talked about.
I just got this about an hour ago, ordered it last friday free shipping and here it is.
Immediately plugged it in without attaching to my headphones (VMODA) just to chat test with all my online friends, you know what they said? "Who is this?" They cannot believe the audio quality of this thing, all of them asked for the link to order, sadly sold out until June 5th which isn't too far off and if you haven't gotten one of these yet, do it now!
I also turned my mic input way down bc I used to have it cranked up just to be heard and had to yell most of the time, now I can talk normally or even whisper and they say it sounds so clear, and just for testing purposes I had someone stand in the room with me and make some noises of varying loudness just to see what was picked up, guess what they heard nothing to very little of anything, incredible!
OK, so far we all seem to get that this mic (the actual mic piece) is of great quality and that is what I picked up on by reading reviews and now owning it, but like some ppl have mentioned on here and you can kind of tell by the pics, the build quality from the point behind the mount (the cable and how the cable enters the metal adjustable tube) to the plug is very cheap, the cable is a joke.
A large gauge cable or a braided cable plus some sort of rubber sleeve at the point where the cable enters the tube could be easily applied and I don't think would add too much to the cost, but what do I know.
As far as the cable being too long that's just a matter of use/opinion. It would be nice is they offered 2 sizes 3ft/6ft. I need only 3ft not the 6ft but whatever.
If you play games online with friends working as a team or just in general any voice stuff, this mic rules them all! (Ok I don't own any other mics or headphone/mic combos but my friends all do and I can just tell that this is incredible compared to what they use, I also have 2 headphones that I am attaching this thing to, Beats By Dre Studio Editions and my VMODAs) I have avoided buying any headphone/mic sets bc they sound like garbage based on reviews I have read and considering what I have spent on my headphones I see no need to which is why this Antlion was the perfect solution for me.
Still a 5 star review from me bc the mic is what does it.
Anyways thanks for reading. And enjoy if you do buy one. (I have some friends that might be able to help me make the thing more sturdy wire wise and I might just tape the part going into the tube, idk yet but we will see how it plays out.
Pros:
- Very lightweight with a nice thin wire. Unlike some other microphones I've used (clip-on mics, for instance) the added weight is hardly noticeable.
- Sound quality is good. Not the clearest I've heard, but certainly well above the quality of any microphone that plugs into the Xbox 360 controller. People I play with say it's noticeably better than the other microphones I've tried (and that I sound less nasally, which is always a plus). I can't say much for background noise as my room is pretty quiet.
- Mic picks up my voice VERY easily from about 2"-3" away. No longer to I have to put effort into making myself heard when I just want to talk. No longer do I have to shove the mic into my mouth for it to pick up my voice. I can just sit back and talk like a normal person now.
- Microphones should be easy to use, and this one is very easy to use. For those of you looking for an alternative to the Fragtality headphone mod, this works just fine and is ready to go in seconds.
- Packaging was nice and simple. Well, Amazon decided to send it in a pretty big box (which somewhat defeats the purpose of such nice packaging) but the product packaging itself was well done. It's reusable and very portable.
Cons:
- As others have pointed out, no mute toggle/volume control. This isn't a dealbreaker but it would be very convenient if this feature were available. I have to unplug the mic when I want it muted, and if I get a bit loud I run the risk of blowing out an eardrum or two.
- Some might consider the thin wire a con as well, so I'll put it here as well. I can definitely see it breaking relatively easily if you accidentally run it over with your chair or tug it an odd way. It's noticeably thinner than the wire on the standard Xbox 360 headset.
Other:
- The wire is a lot longer than I need it to be. This isn't really a problem since it's so thin and light, but if you don't like the look of coiled up wires and you don't need such a long wire it's somewhat of an annoyance.
- I had a "hard" time finding a place on my headset where the 3M would stick well. When they say "moderately curved" they mean "barely curved." I had to try about 4 or 5 places before I found a spot that worked perfectly (on my 558's this was just behind and a little above the wire on the left cup). Not a problem, but don't expect to get it on any surface that has more than a very slight curve to it.
Overall I'm happy with my purchase. For the convenience and the quality offered I will take the "cons" any day. But hey, if a mute/volume feature were added it would only make it better.
