About the Author

Peter Lerangis (b. 1955) is a bestselling author of middle-grade and young-adult fiction whose novels have sold more than four million copies worldwide. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Lerangis was working in musical theater when he began editing fiction, which eventually led to writing novels of his own. He got his start writing novelizations under the pen name A. L. Singer, as well as installments of long-running series such as the Hardy Boysand the Baby-sitters Club. Lerangis began publishing under his own name with 1994’s The Yearbook and Driver’s Dead. In 1998 Lerangis introduced Watchers, a six-novel sci-fi series that won Children’s Choice and Quick Picks for Reluctant Readers awards and led to an invitation to dine with the President of Russia at the White House. His other work includes the Abracadabra novels; the Spy X series; Drama Club, a four-book series about high-school theater based on his own Broadway experiences; and exactly three and a quarter books in the New York Times–bestselling 39 Clues series. He lives with his family in New York City, not far from Central Park.

Antarctica: Journey to the Pole (Antarctica (Scholastic)) I searched high and low for fiction about Antarctica and was quite excited when I found this, but this book just didn't cut it for me. I have laboured through it but I was looking for something for a reading group in my year 5 class that stimulated their imagination about Antarctica and really engaged them. Sadly this book did not meet the mark. I will not be using this novel as it is not written in a way that captures the audience. The author seems to get caught up in family politics which are not particularly engaging. All in all I am disappointed.

Grades 6-9. It begins in Lower Manhattan in (NY) in 1909 when Jack Winslow (main character) tries to find money for a trip to Antarctica. Since Jack didn't have enough money he had to ask one of friends in his college, Harvard Crimson. His friend thought Jack wasn't so serious, so he only gave him a quarter of the money that Jack needed for the trip. Soon after, they got the money they needed. The money was mainly for the ship, but Jack still needed a crew. Some members of his crew were his 16 year old son Colin, 15 year old stepson Andrew and Philip Westfall, the young nephew of the expeditions sponsor. During their voyage they versed many harsh challenges like maneuvering around icebergs. Once they get there another crew member Bailey is missing and the crew goes out and tries to find him.

Antartica Doing The Impossible

Are you tired of seeing the same ole' suspensful t.v. shows and movies. If you are then i think you should read the book "Antartica", by Peter Lerangis. The book is a suspensful thriller about the crew of the Mystery (a ship) wanting to be the first ship to sail to the south pole. After the ship gets stuck in an icecap, they are forced to tear the ship apart and build four life rafts.While the crew was halling the rafts over the icecap to get to the water a seal bust through the ice and bites Andrew's leg off. They finally find water and set sail. When they do they find another island. After a while they leave the island to set sail back to the icecap where they had to leave some of there crew. On there way back to the icecap a big whale tips there raft over and leaves them stranded in icy waters.

An appealing book with a wise choice of words.

The author of this book has an interesting dipiction of various settings throughout the story. His delineations of the settings in this story include an almost entrepreneurial type of writing not often seen in many of today's books. Although this story has a rather peculiar conclusion that has lead me to believe most readers under 25 with the exception of myself (I am fourteen) would not be interested in this book, I still believe it is very enthralling and a good read.

In 1909, after the death of his second wife, Jack Winslow andhis sixteen-year-old son Colin and fifteen-year-old stepson Andrew,along with a crew, set out the explore Antartica. Colin and Andrew resent each other, there are arguments among the crew, and the journey is long and difficult. And once they land, it's an even longer journey across Antarctica, that not everyone that sets out will survive. And back on the ship, Colin must deal with a mutiny among the small crew left behind. This was an excellant historical adventure story, different from many others for kids and teens. However, I do not agree with the classification of the book as one for ages 9-12. With the older characters and a story that would appeal more to older readers, this book would be better classified as one for readers 12 and up. I think teenagers who enjoy this type of book would be the best audience.

A secret expedition hired by the multimillionaire Horace Putney sets out into the harsh circumstances of the Antarctic, with heroic Jack Winslow as the expedition leader. But tensions arise along the journey. Conditions are far more harsh then the crew expected, and the ultimate test of survival will reflect the faith of the crew. The choices are impossible situations, and their only hope is to endure and go on. The author, Peter Lerangis, writes this amazing first part of the story beautifully and with a flare that are portrayed by proffesional writers who know not just how to think up an amazing story, but to write it with the exact spices it needs. This is what we are able to experience when we read the painful story that Peter Lerangis introduced, a story that can't be forgotten any time soon.

I think this book is great if you like a adventure based on history.this book is definately not the best adventure I've read but it's interesting though.3 stars.
