Marriage . . . you gotta laugh.
They say that marriage is a lot like insanity, in that they both require commitment. I so get that.
When you’re in those first giddy stages of dating, you have no idea what life is going to throw your way. You’re just two bright-eyed kids full of optimism, convinced you’re going to be the happiest married couple ever.
Y’all. Trust me. Saying, “I do” is easy. It’s the next fifty years or so that can get a little tricky.
There are days you feel like you’ve never loved each other more. But there are also days filled with disappointment and silence that never seem to end because you just can’t seem to find the words to make it right.
Marriage can be the biggest blessing and the most significant challenge two people ever take on. It’s the joy of knowing there’s someone to share in your sorrows and triumphs, and the challenge of living with someone who thinks it’s a good idea to hang a giant antelope head on your living room wall.
And yet we are in this thing together. For the rest of our lives. Not just for better or for worse, but for better AND for worse.
That’s what this book is about. The times that brought us together and the times we were falling apart. The days we wouldn’t trade for anything in the world, and that time he hung an antelope on my wall.
Welcome to the story of a real marriage.
Melanie (aka Big Mama)

You guys. It was so good. I chuckled so much while reading, and have basically recommended it to everyone I know. Melanie isn't really telling you how to have a good marriage; this is NOT a self-help, keep God in your marriage type book. Shankle is sharing hilarious stories of her marriage and how God led her to her person. It's a funny, easy, light read, and I can't imagine a single person not enjoying it. And I'll be honest, I even liked this better than her memoir on friendship. Yep.
Perry & Melanie have a very different marriage than my husband and I do - but we unite on one thing: humor. I gut laughed my way through the chapter on humor vs. romance in marriage. SO true. And anyone who writes fake endorsements for the beginning of her book is absolutely worth reading!
What I appreciate the most is that she recognizes that no two marriages are alike, and that's okay. I love her honesty about what growing up in a divorced family caused her to miss, and to desire, and to eventually find with Perry. In a world where divorce is becoming more and more of the norm, I love that she shows that there is hope for the kids of divorce to change the odds. I love her resolve to do what it takes to make her marriage work. Well done, Melanie!
But this book, oh this book. It is beyond funny, and touching, and sweet, and full of marriage wisdom. You will nod and smile and laugh through every single page, while also taking away some gems of having a Christ-centered, prayer filled marriage. (You will also hand the book to your husband several times and ask him to read a page or two or a chapter, thanks Melanie!!!)
One word of caution- do NOT read this around other people. I attempted reading during my lunch break a couple days and ended up having to read sections to my coworkers because I was laughing so hard. The upside? One of them downloaded it then and there on her Kindle and another bought it that night. :)
Please read this book- you won't be sorry!
