By John Fowler the Obsessive Compulsive Reviewer TOP 500 REVIEWER on October 13, 2012

Radio Netherlands has issued a 7 volume anthology of The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, 1935-2010.
The first 2 volumes (1935-1960) were on Q-Disc, Volumes 3-7 (1960-2010) are on RCO Live.
The first 4 volumes have apparently been deleted.

Update: All 7 volumes, plus an additional 5 devoted to the orchestra's chief conductors, have been reissued in an insanely expensive 152 CD set: The Radio Legacy - Limited Edition

I am quite pleased with Volumes 1 and 2, the Mengelberg and Beinum eras.
The only drawback I can see is that the Dutch government, in exchange for their subsidy, apparently required the orchestra to play a lot of contemporary Dutch music.
It hasn't aged that well.
There is more of it in Volume 2 than Volume 1, but the situation really got out of hand beginning with Volume 3.
I had almost forgotten how sucky contemporary music was back in the sixties.

Volumes 3-4 cover the Haitink era, 1960-80 (though it still hasn't really ended).

ANTHOLOGY OF THE ROYAL CONCERTGEBOUW ORCHESTRA
Volume III (1960-1970)

Symphony No. 8 in B minor (Ormandy/Nov. 12, 1967). HINDEMITH: Mathis der Maler (Ormandy/Nov. 12, 1967). MOZART: Violin Concerto No. 3 in G, K. 216 (Valery Klimov/Ormandy/Nov. 12, 1967). MAHLER: Symphony No. 7 in E minor (Haitink/Nov. 16, 1969). BRAHMS: Tragic Overture (Monteux/May 14, 1962). STRAUSS: Don Quixote (Fournier/Szell/June 19, 1964). Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra is captured in a 1960-1970 Anthology in 14 CDS that has some world famous conductors, some famous and not so familiar compositions. I liked Verdi's Falstaff and most of the Germanic composers. There was a British Britten and American Varese. I have trouble enjoying some 20th Century compositions though I have CDs by Siblelius, Ravel, Dutilleux, Hindemith, Shostakovich, Prokoviev, and Stravinsky. My pre-order for the 1950-1960 set may be hard to come by. I plan to travel to Amsterdam and take in the music venues.
