Editorial Reviews

This all region DVD recording features over 6 hours of music (but no video footage - only screen shots!) by Anthony Braxton, including new pieces in his Ghost Trance Music series. The main ensemble has 12 musicians, including Braxton himself, as well as Gino Robair, Taylor Ho Bynum, Greg Kelley, Sara Schoenbeck, Scott Rosenberg, Liz Allbee, Kyle Bruckmann, and Dan Plonsey. Two of the pieces were recorded live in San Francisco at the Victoria Theater. The music ranges from orchestral sounding to free jazz freak outs.

Several performances with different ensembles--all excellent quality music. Mostly large group ensembles, 12tet and 13tet performing his distinctive compositions, and a couple of trio performances. If you like any of Anthony Braxton's other Ghost Trance Music CDs, then you'll like this DVD. The music is comparable to the music on his 1997 Ninetet at Yoshi's on Leo or the Iridium GTM set.

You will need a DVD player however, unless you find some specialized software (iSkysoft DVD ripper works on a Mac) to rip the music from DVD, and then transfer it to CD or iPod. An added plus is that it is recorded at a very high sample rate, much higher quality recording than current CDs. There is no "video" as such to accompany the music, only some pictures from the liner notes, consisting of Braxton's drawings.

Considering that this DVD has over six hours of music, it is a great bargain. Highly Recommended!!
