Editorial Reviews

Review

  • Author Nancy LaRonda Johnson brings readers a dark tale of good versus evil in her book.... It is dark, bold, shocking, riveting, violent, and wonderfully written.... From the prologue, I was drawn into this book and could not put it down until I read the very last page. This is one of those books you will want to read again and again, each time getting something different from it.  Reviewed by Anne Boling for Readers' Favorite
  • This is an extremely compelling story.... The characters are complex and their situations held my interest throughout the book. Good job with grammar and proofreading. Commentary by Judge, Writer's Digest 21st Annual Self-Published Book Awards

Penitent is defined as feeling regret for sins: expressing or feeling regret or sorrow for having committed sins or misdeeds. A penitent is also somebody who feels regret: a sinner or wrongdoer who feels regret or sorrow for misdeeds. And a penitent is somebody doing penance: somebody who does a penance as directed by a priest or minister after confessing his or her sins.

Horribly scarred and filled with despair, Alezea has spent an eternity as a consort of Satan. Her child Thomas is a psychotic killer, mentored by his father to murder little girls, including his sisters.

Looking upon her son's next victim:

"Alezea tried to imagine how this little angel would find her way to heaven's gates. That was her holding solace: that the dead did find their way and were not trapped in a purgatory state, wandering the earth or haunting those who gathered around their place of death."

Alezea loves her son, in spite of his vile acts. She will sacrifice everything to join forces with Rachel in a valiant attempt save Thomas from the evil which stains his soul.

Anticipation of the Penitent, by Nancy LaRonda Johnson, is a Christian and inspirational novel with elements of spiritual warfare. Ms. Johnson starts her journey with the questions: why is there evil in the world and can a sociopath be saved? Through symbols and metaphors, Ms. Johnson guides the reader through not only the stories of Alezea, Thomas, and Rachel, but also through the larger issues facing all of us in our lives.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect with this book, but I'm happy to say that once I got started, I couldn't stop. From the very first page, the story began to pull me in. I will say, this is a powerful story with many spiritual lessons that can be learned in real life. It is very well written with hair-raising twists and turns and unforgettable characters throughout. At times, I was filled with anger and fear. Other times, I was filled with hope and moved to tears. If your looking for an exciting story that's different from the norm then this is the story for you. You won't be disappointed.

"Anticipation of the Penitent" by Nancy LaRonda Johnson
(spoilers ahead, read at your own risk)
I really didn't know what to expect coming in on this book. I had read the blurb about it on GoodReads and was intrigued, and decided to give it a read, figuring, "Hey, why not?" But when the book started with a woman deformed and blind, I was hooked instantly. I had to find out if this was something from the Middle Ages, or something from back in Biblical times, when they would parade out a demon-possessed woman to "tell fortunes" (Acts 16:16) "As we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners much gain by fortune-telling."
But, instead, the story shifts back in time, and we see Azalea being visited by a being, and her son Thomas having to find a sacrifice for atonement for the being. Fortunately for the reader, there is never anything graphic in any of the descriptions, or the book may have been over the top with the violence and gore. You see, Azalea has been visited by the devil, and Thomas been the end result of the visitation, or so she thought. And with the initial visitation in the book, the story begins its rocky journey towards redemption.
Azalea is the first to try to escape the clutches of her imprisonment, taking Thomas off to a commune like town called Gabriel, where she finds God, but in the process loses her son and her body. Remember the deformed lady? Yea, that was her. After Thomas tries to kill another girl, and fails, Azalea tries to take her own life in the ultimate sacrifice, much like Christ did for the church. She blinds herself, breaks both her legs to the point where they have to be amputated, and messes up a hand to where it also needs to be amputated as well.

I wasn’t sure that I was going to like this novel when I first picked it up and began reading. It has a touch of the absolute horrific secreted away within the folds of its eloquent narrative. Yet it was absolutely gripping.
My concern initially was that these characters couldn’t possibly be intended to be realistic, concluding that the novel must be an allegory of good versus evil. Surely people would not be so willingly complicit in another’s crimes? Would they?
When I thought about the world around me, I realised that they are, all the time, every day. There is that neighbour who knows that the woman’s husband beats her and does nothing. The mother who knows that her son is an abuser - killer - whatever, but does not speak out. I found as the plot deepened, my frustration with the characters lessened until it was non-existent. The author had me hooked and drew me in, so that eventually I found myself hoping even for Thomas, in all his misguided, manipulative misery, that he would find peace and escape from the pursuing evil. I began to understand that they were all victims of evil in one way or another and it was a refreshing view of humanity.
This novel is an unashamed look at the walking out of the Christian journey and a demonstration that God’s love truly is for everyone who asks for it. Warning - it is not for the faint-hearted. Some parts of it are challenging for readers who are particularly sensitive to horror and the kidnap and murder of children being portrayed.
