Brilliant book, Shanon spent over 7 years charting his experiences and countless others out in the field.
I consider this book in the ranks of Doors of Perception by Aldous Huxley. I own many books on entheogens,
but this ranks as my single most favorite book, and has been for over a decade. It is a classic which will live
forever. I have read it from front to back at least 3 times it is that good. Highly recommended and thanks
Benny for this classic on Charting Ayahuasca that will live forever.
The good - A statistically significant pool of participants, clearly differentiated participant reports and types, excellent differentiation and description of the many convoluted and hard to describe ayahuasca effects and a forthright and clear description of ayahuasca in traditional and comtemporary settings.
The bad - Not much to say here at all.
The last word - Anyone personally or with a loved one considering using ayahuasca or wanting to find out more about the spirit vine will find this a dry [academic] but highly informative and well considered text. A valuable and insightful addition to any library.
He treats his subject with respect and breaks certain idea associations as "psychosis" as defining the ayahuasca state (bravo)and argues with evidence that indigenous cultural exposure alone does not necessarily condition visualizations content during the ayahuasca experience. For any individual looking for a serious, highly disciplined, ga-ga-lite approach to what could be a pretty slippery, "feeelings" driven topic, you must read this honest, unpretentious text.
Not easy, bouncy and full of New Age PC spirit-jargon. Despite this relieving manque, it is nevertheless a most inspiring read, personal enough at the right times to keep the mortal odour of subject clinician or pedantic social-anthropologist out of the air. Really a "right on" experiential read, built upon years of studied personal experience with the brew within and outside of the associated cultural settings and hence, rare indeed.
It is an award winning piece of work on an international scale.
