An Important Introduction To Something New

Much to my surprise a lot of soul/funk fans do not care for bands such as Jamiroquai. May have something to do with their personality more than the music itself. Well following in the league of them,BNH and Jamie Lidell (well,on his Jim album anyway) comes Smoove and Terrell. Much like Lidell and the ladies Lily Allen and the imfamous Amy Winehouse this duo,including vocalist John Turrell erupted onto the music scene with this album. And to be honest I never even heard of them until tonight. It was actually recommended on the basis that it contained music that I would personally find very appealing. But as with some of my friends,as well as my own mother my tastes are not necessarily guided by what others might expect. So needless to say I decided to give both of their albums a listen,to see what the impact was. And what is this debut album for Swoon + Turrell say to me musically?I'll tell you.

A lot of this music does fit all too easily into a certain type of sound I'll give you that. Songs such as "Hammond","I Can't Give You Up","You Don't Know","The Different","You Got Me Bad" and "Darker Days" do fit into many British retro-soul clishes. Bomastic cymbals mixed extremely high with everything kind of thrown into the loud rhythms-it usually always goes about like that. What changes about this are the lyrics. They have an excellent understanding of the human soul required for this music and express it every chance they get. Musically that comes more into the light on numbers such as "Beggerman" with it's mixture of 60's soul and late 70's sophistifunk/dance styled music. "Hypnotized" is an easy highlite for myself,as well as it would be for anyone who enjoys rhythmic,alborately chorded Stevie Wonder/Marvin Gaye/Gino Vannelli styled jazz influenced funky soul. The basslines and flutes flow well with the way the song is constructed as well.

The near instrumental "Latin Groove" is nearly as strong with,as the song indicates a strong South American flavor in the rhythms and piano chords. "Without You" is an excellent closing ballad. Though it does bring out one quality of the overall sound of the album one could do different and not be the worst for it. That is the production on the sound quality end is somewhat harsh and overcooked. Because often enough the drums are mixed so high,on the same level as the bass/keyboard parts that the effect is often overwelming purely soundwise. This is probably just picking nits,as usually one would be used to hearing either the drums or front of the rhythm section up in the mix. In this case the overall writing,lyrics and vocals are about standard. I'll choose to get into John Turrell's vocal style another time. But on this occasion it was really more the music that made an impression with me on this album. And it has both it's wonderful and puzzling moments to be truthfull.

Reminds me of Jamiroquai

The main singers voice is so reminiscent of something I might hear on "Virtual Insanity", yet his voice is a tad bit deeper. Wonderful beats and just a wholly upbeat album. You can still find it in you to tap your feet even in the mellower tracks. For 5.00, you definitely should buy it. Hell even if it was at a normal price, I would still buy it. I recommend.

First off, yes this is really two blokes from the "Toon", but hang on - Sting? Pet Shop Boys? LightHouse Family(almost)? Bryan Ferry? Animals? Prefab Sprout? Kane Gang?. Hey! Geordie boys we are here!
Before we plumb the depths of Cheryl T-Weedy-soon to be ex-Mrs.Cole, or the X-factor-bloke-we've-forgotten-already, the North East has a lot to answer for and ANTIQUE SOUL is definately up with the former group rather than Simon Cowell's latter.

Lots of loops loosely lashed to the sort of raspy vocal that turns up once in a generation emptying a pint glass to the soundtrack of The Committments. Decorated with layers of often synthetic Jazz, but very craftily so to convey Soul sufficiently northern or blue-eyed.

Favourites? Try it yourself and make up your own mind, but HAMMOND stands out for doing exactly what it says on the B3? tin.
I CAN'T GIVE YOU UP sounds slightly cliched, but is genuinely faithful.
BEGGARMAN is brightly remarkable and WITHOUT YOU it's moody, brooding reposte and a fitting closing to a rather splendid first out.

Can you dance? Hell you are gonna have to, whether you like it or not.

First heard "Beggarman" on the Radcliffe & Maconie Show on BBC Radio 2 - it was their record of the week, and caused one of those moments that cause you to buy an entire album on the strength of one track - and I have not been disappointed!! Soul as a genre is always marked by its so-called "authenticity"....so when these guys turn up (from the NE of England) mixing contemporary electronic sounds with (northern) soul, it works at every level. Joyous tunes, guaranteed to get you smiling, dancing...or both. Turrell's voice has been compared to Paul Weller - a fair analogy, but he has a fantastic and powerful range, that covers 4 decades of soul sound....this is a really great album - one of my best finds of 2009. Craig Charles on BBC 6 Music has also championed them, and he contributes to the sleeve-notes. Very highly recommended.
