Still, while I was aware of and making efforts to incorporate Buteko breathing into my protocol for the past six months, it was this book and CD, which afforded me my first true positive results.
Changing your breathing pattern by reducing your breath can be quite challenging. Especially since the very changes we are making through the Buteyko method can initially provoke anxiousness. Since I am attempting to quell the release of excess stress hormones, this is not beneficial. My attempts at Buteyko before this book and CD mostly created overwhelm and defeat. I eventually put my efforts aside.
Enter Patrick McKeown. I first heard him interviewed on this podcast: Primal Diet-Modern Health with Beverly Meyer. https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/primal-diet-modern-health/id577470427?mt=2&i=219124723. I was taken by his gentle Irish manner and tremendous clinical success teaching the Buteyko Breathing Method worldwide.
"Anxiety Free - Stop Worrying and Quieten Your Mind" was my personal choice because Beverly so highly recommended the accompanying CD and because of my own hierarchy of symptoms. I am sure any one of his titles is equally a great choice.
The book had me at this Oscar Wilde quote on the first page: "thinking is the most unhealthy thing in the world, and people die of it just as they die of any other disease".
Patrick became the right teacher, with the right way into the Buteyko method for me. His demeanor is persistently gentle and encouraging and it immediately made me feel confident that I will succeed. It is notable, that while I have a regular practice of yoga and mindfulness for over 20 years now, this meditation CD has become one of my most useful tools ever. Meanwhile, the book itself instructs and encourages me to keep at my efforts and to bite off a little more, as I feel fit.
Small but noticeable gains are coming weekly through my persistence. I mostly notice a deeper sense of calm and observe my breath is quiet and smoother at those times. My CP is going up, but very slowly. All this is giving me confidence that I CAN progressively secure greater wellbeing by correcting my most primary function: a life sustaining breathing pattern.
Please don't wait to order this book and CD to get started. It is the most loving and empowering thing you can do to help yourself.
Peace and well wishes to us all!
(Just to note, even before the Buteko Breathing Method, this is my healing lifestyle profile:
I ascribe to a nutritionally dense, gut healing, anti-inflammatory diet, maintain a dedicated primal-wise lifestyle, practice Iyengar Yoga daily and live a kind, simple, mindful life.)
point of about eight seconds up to about fifteen seconds. The breathing
exercises are easy and can be practiced anywhere; but will take some
effort on ones part to see results. I try to practice the breathing
exercises as much as possible throughout the day. Would say the main
thing is to try to breath gently and to always feel a slight to moderate
air hunger. As Patrick McKeown explains in the book, without doing that
one will not see any progress.
Had a hard time overcoming the bad habit of breathing through the mouth
while eating, this took a lot effort. But in this short amount of time,
have been able to stop mouth breathing while eating. The hard part was
breathing through a runny nose. The runny nose is almost completely gone
now. Still have a bit of runny nose through one nostril, but is much
much less than when I started about two weeks ago. Suspect this will
soon go away.
Mouth taping is also slowly working, which had started before reading
the book and practicing the breathing exercises. Know this because one
night was so tired that fell asleep before had taped the mouth. The
following morning woke up with dry mouth and throat, also slight morning
heartburn returned. Before this happened was not sure that mouth taping
was working. Since was still waking up a bit tired, was excepting too
much from mouth taping to fast. The morning fatigue will take much
longer to subside, since have not slept well in years. Mouth taping is

There is a lot of wisdom in this book, wish had found it sooner. For

Can not thank the work of Dr. Konstantin Buteyko / Buteyko Clinic /
Patrick McKeown enough. The Buteyko Method has changed my life in this
short amount of time and will only get better as I keep practicing,
getting the CP to 20 seconds and above. Should checkout the other books

Has it helped with my anxiety? A bit. I think more because i feel i have done something about it rather than making any profound change.
The CD was a bit lacking.
I have been following the breathing exercises in the book for a short while and it truly makes a huge difference - lots more energy and a quieter, clearer mind.
You have to stick with it because it takes practise to get it right - but it's well worth it.
I have also downloaded Partricks app on iPhone as it makes it easier to practise on the go.
