I just finished reading the erotic novel, "Anybody's Somebody" by Courtney Phoenix White. The story is quite provocative which is exactly what it's intended to be, but I found something else behind the words, vibrators, fellatio, cunnilingus, trysts and dalliances...a heart.
Anybody's Somebody tells the story of Mia. A young woman who has just been left at the altar by a cheating boyfriend. She is obviously devastated and trying desperately to hold onto her emotional sanity. Karrine her sexually liberated best friend is there to offer sage advice, and a hip (yet sisterly) advice on her current predicament. The story also offers another cast member that shall become quite prominent to the reader her vibrator...Baby.
I won't spoil the novel by revealing more than what I have already have done. I will say that it's very intoxicating provocative and beautifully done. Yes the passion purrs off the pages. Yes the climaxes are volcanic and vividly portrayed, but what sets Courtney Phoenix White's novel above and beyond it's contemporary brethren is that it never loses its soul or its compassion.
I was physically (ahem) engaged in reading this book. Still what surprised me is that I found myself rooting for Mia as well. She is a believable character as well as Karrine. Both of them seem cut from the same cloth and I feel as if I've known them forever. The fact that they are flawed and fabulous makes them even more believable.
So what words would I use to describe the debut novel from Courtney Phoenix White, Anybody's Somebody? Let's see...Passionate, provocative, powerful, heartfelt, lustful, sad, beautiful, ugly, mesmerizing and finally it's what we all go through each and every day...life.
Anybody’s Somebody by Phoenix tells the story of Mia, a woman who has been left at the altar by her philandering fiancé. This devastating blow takes her on an interesting journey of self discovery. Written in a very conversational style, Mia shares her struggles with men, the betrayals of friendship and the quest to find herself. There is the added bonus of Phoenix’s original poetry laced throughout the book. The poetry is beautiful, heartfelt and gives an honest look at the lives and struggles of women….especially while on the journey of self discovery and leading to self worth.
The story line is very candid and extremely relatable. There were so many points that I felt spoke to places I have been in my own life; her words ringing poignant and true as things I’ve either thought, said or done at different junctures of my life.
It’s listed as erotica, but in truth, this well-written book, is so much more than that. This is a must read for any woman who has ever felt misunderstood, undervalued, abused and who has ever found herself looking for love in all the wrong places.
5 well-deserved stars.
In ANYBODY'S SOMEBODY we see what some will do in order to find love and to be loved, even if it might not be the right path for them. Mia and Karrine are outwardly what so many women would want to be, but inside they are dealing with hurt, disappointment and struggles that threaten to destroy all that they have worked for.
I think that readers will resonate the most with Mia as she is dealing with love in seemingly all the wrong places. She is also dealing with betrayal from those she trusted the most. Will she come to the realization that good sex doesn't a great relationship make or will she continue to settle just to say she is anybody's somebody?
There is also the issues of the past and how they can keep creeping into our world trying to taint what we're trying to create moving forward. Mia is reminded that you have to move on if you are going to grow and get something better out of life. You deserve the best, she is told, but the only way to get it is to stop searching in the wrong places.
Powerful, passionate and addictive, Phoenix uses her literary skills to reminds us of the importance of knowing your worth and realizing when it is time to close one chapter and begin anew.
“Anybody’s Somebody” is a raw, honest, sensual, sexual, insightful depiction of the life of a modern woman, living in an era that is tragically void of loyalty and true love seems impossible to find. Instead, hollow sexual entanglements have replaced the powerful bonds that hold couples together. It is a story of what Mia has been through and what she has learned to settle for.
In-between many of the chapters there are also powerful poems that serve to enhance the prose as well as the overall vibe and theme of the novel.
I found this novel beautifully bold because, as I read chapter after chapter, I could literally feel how much of herself the author poured onto the pages. Overall, “Anybody’s Somebody” was a great read. I’m looking forward to reading more from PHOENIX.
