If you're going to go all "legal eagle" and use courtroom jargon, make sure you're using it correctly. There is a huge difference between a trial and a parole hearing. I was so confused because I'm pretty sure if there was a retrial, Whitley would never have received a summons to a parole hearing. She'd be contacted by the prosecution and told there would be a retrial.
I got 38% into the book before I started skimming through. The stalker, Amy, was just pure nonsense. It's extremely difficult to walk into a regional airport and sniff around the planes. I have a friend who's a pilot at a regional airport and she said there are always people out there keeping an eye on the planes, especially the private jets.
This could have been great, but it really fell flat.
And I am so glad I did.
Anyone But Him was an absolutely sensational novel about digging through a murky past and finding a diamond of a future. I will never look at the stars in the sky the same again. This book was beautifully written from cover to cover and I absolutely could not put it down.
From the very beginning, Cassie Graham throws you into the story of Whitley and Jennings and all the twists and turns that already exist between them. Jennings is a famous movie star, Whitley has a dark past, and there's a lot of secrets being held in the present - on both ends.
Graham takes you on a journey through pain and anguish as well as magical beauty. Watching these two characters fall in love is truly a sight to behold. There are a lot of things going on in this book, some that will hit you out of nowhere with a WHAM-smack! straight to the head. But, it never feels like too much is happening and everything plays into this incredible journey these two must endure to finally find the path to each other.
I had the pleasure of reading Graham's debut novel, Unable to Resist, and it was a really good debut. However, she has truly outdone herself with Anyone But Him. Her writing has far surpassed the writing in her first novel, the words seeming to come much easier in this story. Her wit is effortless, causing me to laugh out loud quite a few times as I read. Perhaps her most endearing quality as a writer is her ability to paint a picture. The scenery in this book is absolutely phenomenal - from the storms rolling through California to the beautiful water in Mexico and the stunning flatlands of Kansas, Graham truly has a gift for putting her readers where she wants them, which really adds to the overall reading experience.
I will say that you will find more than just a love story here. It's nothing like anything I've ever read before, and I do mean NOTHING. There's so much here, it would be a shame to live life without reading this beautiful story.
Many times in this book I found myself thinking Jennings was too good to be true (which I guess technically he is, since he's fictional lol). He is like a prince straight out of a fairy tale and it's been a long time since I've read a book where I've felt such strong love from the male lead. He will have you swooning hard. Oh, and the sex scenes? Holy cheese on a stick. Have a fan ready, y'all.
Whitley's story is a roller coaster ride throughout. Every time I thought she was finally on the path to being free to love, something else came to smack that notion down. It's a tough journey for her, but I'm pretty sure the ending is what she'd always hoped for.
Or is it?
After that epilogue, I'm not so sure...
I am truly blown away by this piece of art and I am beyond proud of Cassie and what she has achieved here. Five glorious stars from me. Bravo.
Whitley and Jennings will grab you heart strings and start playing puppet master with them. I loved how each chapter was either inside Whitley or Jennings mind. There was no wondering what the other felt.
The two plot twist, so to speak, that Cassie Graham threw in there were even better. Both Whitley and Jennings holding secrets from the other. Watching the story unfold you have no choice but to let the book play puppet master with your heart.
You'll get happy and excited or even sad and pissed off when they do. Whitley's character is easily relatable to people. Her being someone who has shut off her emotions and built up that wall from love is something I know a lot of people do. Jennings being a celebrity who has his publicist making him look like a uber dick who sleeps around, well minus the celebrity part I know some guys probably get the reputation of sleeping around when they don't.
This was an absolutely amazing book. I could not put it down whenever I was reading it. The ending left me all giddy and wanting more..
AMAZING JOB TO CASSIE GRAHAM.
I love that the two had their obstacles and they were forthcoming about them, that they had past issues that they worked to deal with - together and apart.
Anyone but Him was one of those books I didn't know too much about before I started reading it. And I'm kind of glad for that. I didn't know exactly what to expect and it kept me captivated and turning the pages quickly. It moved forward at just the right pace, the characters had depth and were likable (well, most were - Lark I could have slapped).
I can't wait for more from Cassie Graham!! Four and a half stars for a great read!!
I can't wait for the second book in this series! Pick it up you won't be disappointed!!!!
Great Job, Cassie!
