Sometimes this led to big adventurous steps like adopting a boy from Africa, but most of the time it involved simple acts of love like taking a meal to a sick family or listening to a hurting friend.
She described her remarkable shift in perspective in very normal terms: “What we once did in order to ‘matter’ or to ‘be seen’ we forgot all about. We matter and are seen because of love.”
I can relate to the desire to matter. I want to make a difference. But perhaps I’ve been going about it the wrong way. I was captivated by the message of Anything and I can’t wait to put it into practice by surrendering myself to anything God wants from me. I’ve been resisting what God wants. I could sense it while reading the book, so I am ready to stop resisting now. This was a timely read for me. I needed this.
If you’re ready for a change in perspective, check out Anything by Jennie Allen.

What can I say except that I highly recommend you read this book! As much as I know I should write Allen, I come away finding it hard to do so as you come to view Jennie through her writing as a friend. Her writing style is conversational and it flows so well. I picked this book up and had no problem turning page after page, eager to read more. She hit home with a lot of what she said (at least for me). She is real, honest, open and you can just picture her sitting across a table from you inviting you to share in her story. This book is interesting, encouraging and provoking.
There are a few typos early on but just overlook them and know that the content is so much more important and powerful. Open yourself up to God and what He wants to say to you through this book and do in your heart and life.
P.S. I got my husband (who isn't a big reader) to read this on a overnight trip he took. He finished it just as he touched down back at home!
The main takeaway from the book? In order to let God truly work in your live, you have to be willing to give up EVERYTHING for Him to be able to do ANYTHING. If you hold back portions of your life from God, and keep your life segmented,...how can you expect God to do much of anything in your life? His plans are much bigger and more far-reaching than we could dream -- so we need to stop limiting ourselves by holding ourselves back. Instead, let go of your dream and let God lead you into His dream for you.
honest questions, concerns and challenges that we all face in life. The thought of being selfless and pouring oneself into the lives of other to bless them and glorify God is a great challenge! I've responded by taking it on. I hope that Jennie writes more books, her writing style and honest vulnerability is refreshing and encouraging.
