I'm not a big short story fan. Whenever I do read one, I always have the feeling that there isn't enough space to develop characters, atmosphere and plot sufficiently. Unfortunately this one wasn't an exception and I definitely felt that mentioned components were neglected. However, I take into consideration that this short story most probably isn't a stand-alone and that I haven't read the "major book" on which this short story is based.

In any case, I thought the main issue of the book, the "sacrifice" Shane was offering, a rather peculiar choice for a short story. I also thought that this complex issue was dealt with in a rather shallow way. More specifically, the issue wasn't that the hero wanted to protect the heroine by all and any means but the fact that he didn't discuss his choice with the heroine before. As I said, since I haven't read the relevant "main book", I might not completely understand the undercurrents but as presented in the short story, I couldn't really relate.

Shane and Jen are back! (First introduced in Because of You)

Shane Garrison and Jennifer St James are bound together by more than their professions, and as we visit them again, we see that their love continues to evolve as they work through some pretty tough issues. Both are survivors: he, of horrible woulds suffered at war; she a cancer survivor, with scars of her own. They've worked through a lot together, but when the question of natural-born children comes up, a gap devlops in their relationship~~one that can only be closed by love, compassion, and understanding.

This is an excellent short story, easily read in an hour or so. The story arc is complete, the connection between the characters is riveting, and the love scenes are...is it hot in here, or is it just me?

Ms. Scott has quickly entrenched herself as one of my new favorite authors. With her unique voice and the experience of a career US Army officer, she brings a fresh, authentic point of view to military romance. I can't wait to read more.

This is a "Coming Home Series" short story following "Because of You" which continues the story of Sergeant First Class Shane Garrison and Jen St. James. It's 2008, At Fort Hood, Texas. Shane is in physical therapy after sustaining severe injuries in combat in Iraq. Jen has faced breast cancer, an aggressive type which may come back if she gets pregnant. Thus, Shane wants a vasectomy, even if Jen wants children. Jen is Shane's heart and soul and does not want to risk losing her and possibly also their child. The risk is just too great. Shane is still a soldier wanting to get back to active duty with his buddies. His best friend is Vic Carponti who's also in physical therapy and Shane discusses this topic with him. Vic had also been seriously injured and now has a prosthetic hand ... along with a condescending attitude of Shane's decision. Jen is a nurse who had witnessed and helped Shame during months of recovery. She loves Shane but is terrified at the goal he has set to return to the war...he is a die-hard soldier. She has her fears and scars, also ... from a double mastectomy. Shane's fear of ever losing Jen petrifies him; he lacks the courage to even bring up talking to her about his decision. How does one lose the fear, without losing the love? As always, a very beautiful, compelling story from popular author Jessica Scott. It's a short story which hopefully leads you to read the rest of her novels in the "Coming Home Series."

While generally not a fan of short stories, because they don't provide the opportunity to develop characters, atmosphere and plot sufficiently. This book is an exception because its a follow up to Because of You. I am so glad Ms. Scott chose to continue with Jen and Shane's story as there was a lot more to say about their developing relationship and Shane's continued recovery. One of the many things I like about this author is how she shows that many NCO's care about their "guys" and how some will go all out to help those who are "broken" and need help. This author is also willing to expose those in the command structure who are "deaf, dumb and blind" to what the men under their supervision need and who are to causal about doing their jobs with out regard for how it hurts the unit and the individuals in that unit.

As much as I enjoyed this "sequal", it still has some not well resolved issues that I hope the author will elaborate on in other books in the series. That is why I did not rate the book a 5.

I love everything Jessica Scott writes. This is a little short story squeezed in after Shane and Jen decide to get married. I don't want to spoil anything but the dilemma is whether Jen should get pregnant, considering her health. The same characters pop up at one point or another, continuing the saga. You cannot go wrong with these books!

A quick, but well done, add on to Jen and Shane's HEA, Anything For You will please any fan of the first book. I loved this one, and I was happy to see the two work things out. Scott's humor came through again, especially from Vic (Carponti) while giving Shane a bad times about his vasectomy decisions:

Really, I've already said it, but I'll say it again--I'd love to have a novella about Vic and his wife. Some sort of prequel perhaps. Anything. I love Vic and his gruff-ness and humor.

4 STARS! If you haven't picked up Scott's books yet, I highly recommend doing so--you could even start with this novella, you won't be lost, but I would say reading Because of You first will make your reading that much more enjoyable. For funny, yet very emotional, military romances, pick up these books today!
