I would turn this on and leave it on for hours at a time while populating a large board full of components without any issue of the handle getting too hot.
I have also used the solder spool holder as well. It works well, but I think I prefer not to string out a big line of solder across my desk, so I don't use it much. The added sponge is nice for a quick clean in the middle of a delicate job.
The iron comes with a spare heating element, which I haven't had to use yet. The build quality of this product is very good and solid feeling. I would not be surprised if this lasts me 20+ years.
I wish I'd gotten this iron before.
I'll update this review if I have any additional problems, but as of now I'd recommend this iron to anyone on a budget.
As a side note, the included holder does work, it goes in at a angle and sets very securely. As for heat, I have not noticed any extreme heat on the handle.
Overall I am very satisfied with this unit and I am impressed with the build quality. If you are on a tight budget as I was, this would be a good purchase!
UPDATE, 03/25/2014: I thought I would post an update to how the Iron is working. It works GREAT! I still stand behind my original review and if this unit ever does go out I would not hesitate to buy another one! For context of my usage I am using the Iron to build small DC based projects. The Iron has been reliable from day one and I use it at least 3-4 times a month with an average session of 2-4 hours at a time. Also, at this time I have not replaced the heating element!Even more surprising, I am still using the original tip that came with the iron!
These are a good set of tips for this iron:
10pcs Solder Soldering Iron Tip for Hakko Station 900M 933 907 936
Comes with a conical tip which is OK for some task but I would reccomend buying a chisel tip around the 1mm size (I wouldn't go smaller than 1mm) maybe 1.2mm/1.5mm.
This Iron certainly seems to be a better deal than that janky piece of plastic Weller iron you'd see around this same price range.

Temp variance works flawlessly, tip it came with tins with ease, also came with spare heating element.
Handle is good and does not get hot, using it on maybe 25-30% setting and so far thats the magic ticket for me.
Do not hesitate to buy one of these, price may seem too low to get a quality product, but you'd be surprised.
Also comes with the sponge bracket, and spool holder that all mount onto the iron holder itself, exactly as pictured.
Use - Small PCBs - Included tip is great for my small junctions
