NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A “propulsive” (Entertainment Weekly) novel “full of heart, hope, and compelling questions about who we really are” (Redbook) from the acclaimed author of At the Water’s Edge and Water for Elephants

“Terrific: an incisive piece of social commentary.”—The New York Times Book Review

Isabel Duncan, a scientist at the Great Ape Language Lab, doesn’t understand people, but apes she gets—especially the bonobos Sam, Bonzi, Lola, Mbongo, Jelani, and Makena, who are capable of reason and communication through American Sign Language. Isabel feels more comfortable in their world than she’s ever felt among humans—until she meets John Thigpen, a very married reporter writing a human interest feature. But when an explosion rocks the lab, John’s piece turns into the story of a lifetime—and Isabel must connect with her own kind to save her family of apes from a new form of human exploitation.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Consider reality TV, meth labs, over-the-top animal-rights activists, Botox, tabloids and Internet diatribes, and you, too, might come to the conclusion: People should be more like animals. Sara Gruen’s entertaining, enlightening new novel will certainly leave you thinking so.”—Miami Herald

“Propulsive...Gruen writes with the commercial breathlessness of a cozier Dan Brown.”—
Entertainment Weekly

“Gruen delivers a tale that’s full of heart, hope, and compelling questions about who we really are.”—
Redbook

“Animal lovers, gather ‘round...[
Ape House] is much better [than Water for Elephants]—funny because of some weird characters and circumstances that make life difficult for our intrepid reporter, and at the same time, compelling because those apes put to shame our beloved Homo sapiens.”—Newark Star Ledger

“Part expose, part thriller, part gothic romance and part comedy and farce...Gruen is a master at the popular novel plot.”—
Asheville Citizen Times

“Gruen is clearly enjoying herself here. It is fun...the conceit of a household of language-endowed apes as the ne plus ultra of reality TV — leering humans greedy for profits and naughty thrills...apes who are at once innocent and more compassionate and dignified than the producers and the viewers — is terrific: an incisive piece of social commentary.”—
New York Times Book Review

"[
Ape House] hums along with a pop-culture plot full of slick profiteers, sleazy pornographers, idiotic reality TV and gossip rags — with botox and ape sex thrown in for entertaining reading.”—Des Moines Register

“Gruen has a knack for pacing and for creating distinctive animal characters. Scenes involving the bonobos are winsome without being sappy, and the reader comes to share Isabel’s concern for the animals.”—
Boston Globe

"Gruen’s astute, wildly entertaining tale of interspecies connection is a novel of verve and conscience.”—
Booklist (Starred review)

"Has the dramatic tension of a crime thriller...Twists and turns, lies, and treachery abound in this funny, clever, and perceptive story."—
Library Journal (Starred review)

"Sara Gruen knows things—she knows them in her mind and in her heart. And, out of what she knows, she has created a true thriller that is addictive from its opening sentence. Devour it to find out what happens next, but also to learn remarkable and moving things about life on this planet. Very, very few novels can change the way you look at the world around you. This one does."—Robert Goolrick, author of
A Reliable Wife

"I read
Ape House in one joyous breath. Ever an advocate for animals, Gruen brings them to life with the passion of a novelist and the accuracy of a scientist. She has already done more for bonobos than I could do in a lifetime. The novel is immaculately researched and lovingly crafted. If people fall in love with our forgotten, fascinating, endangered relative, it will be because of Ape House."—Vanessa Woods, author of Bonobo Handshake

This book was not only a great read, but life changing for me.
I learned so much about bonobos - if you don't know what they are, or even if you do, this is a MUST read. And the story itself is a nice read. Well written, compelling. I just loved this book!!!

Ape House was unbelievable - touching, saddening, painfully true and unforgettable. It's written both in a very candid manner, as well as with a lot of humor. If you've never heard of the horrible ways animals are treated in our society - this might open your eyes (however, if you're very sensitive, you might want to skip.) Aside from that, it's a very well thought-out thriller! I wasn't able to put it down.

Another fascinating aspect of this book is how much research the author put into writing it. If you love animals, the idea that you can actually talk with them (and be replied!) in a language of our own will be absolutely amazing to you. This phenomenon needs to be talked about more as well - only through understanding that they are not that different from us, and certainly not lesser, will we be able to see what we're doing to the planet. However - don't get me wrong - animals and communicating with them is not romanticized in this book. There's the good and fascinating, as well as the facepalm inducing - that's what I loved about it!

There was an Anderson Cooper show about a year back where he is invited to the Great Ape Trust to meet the sign language fluent Bonobos who live there. He proceeded to be humiliated on worldwide television after a Bonobo asks him to put on a bunny suit (If you ask me that's not something to be humiliated about.)The whole show was amazing to watch- the totally human intelligence of the Bonobos, how fast they learned to "speak" with humans and the totally mind blowing fact that they even had a desire to. They were truly amazing creatures, making the title of `animal' something I was not comfortable calling them.

When Sara Gruen's "Ape House" came out I was thrilled. "Water for Elephants" was amazing and now she was writing about one of my new fascinations. "Ape House" became a must read.

This novel tells the tale of a group of Bonobos ,much like the one's at the Great Ape Trust, living in a place also much like the Great Ape Trust. Their main caretaker Isabel Duncan, is more than devoted to them. But after giving an interview to John Thigpen, a journalist for the Philadelphia Inquirer, the lab is attacked, leaving Isabel badly injured and letting the Bonobos run free. Before Isabel can do anything to stop it the Bonobos have all been captured and sold to a mysterious buyer.

Not much later a new channel appears- showing only one show, round the clock. Ape House. All the Bonobos in one house with cameras on them all the time. A sort of mix of big brother and national geographic. The show is an instant hit and soon the small town where it's being filmed is mobbed with reporters, protestors, fans and scientists. Both Isabel and John arrive for different reasons- one to write a story, the other determined to get her non-conventional family back.

"Ape House" is a really moving, incredible novel about what it means to be a person and what family is all about. It has all the charm of "Water for Elephants" in a rougher way and the same obvious love and respect for (once gain this word doesn't seem to apply) animals. Fans who are looking for a romance like the one in "Elephants" will be disappointed though. It also brings to light the horrible plight of Bonobos around the world who are rapidly going extinct.

The only thing I didn't like about this book was the length- I wanted to read more, know more. This is a very big story crammed into not very many pages. The readers may suffer for it but the writing never does.

Five stars.

I finally finished this book last night. I really wanted to like this book, but I didn't. The book comes with a really good cause and angle about bonobos, but that's about it. The human in this book is very flat, boring, unlikable, and sometimes ridiculous. I enjoyed reading Water for Elephant even though it was full of some outrageous scenes and characters, but at least I could still move on and immersed myself in. But Ape House is just pain to read through, starting from about halfway of the book. It has such a wonderful beginning and a storyline, but somewhere in between the author fails so bad to carry them on. The plot is getting more silly by the page, with coincidences that simply makes me shake my head and want to laugh. And I agree with other reviewers, that bonobos are about the only lovely characters in this book. I couldn't feel any connection or even care about the human characters through out the pages. The whole book just feels very weak to me, and lack of that connection that we readers are supposed to feel with the characters. It's really sad that Sara Gruen published this one, and I believe I won't be the last person to not like this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Addictive, moving and oozing passion.

I'm always nervous when beginning to read a favourite author's follow up book. (The second book success rate falls at a mediocre 50% in my opinion.) Water for Elephants was one of my favourite books and I eagerly but nervously awaited the arrival of Ape House. I was not disappointed. Gruen has succeeded once again in igniting her reader's passion for not only her characters, but also the subject of her writing.

As a former employee of the pharmaceutical industry I was suprised to find my views on animal testing comprimised by my affection for the human and bonobo characters of this novel. This book proves Gruen's ability to ellicit reader interest in unusual topics and demonstrates her skills in tackling controversial issues through fiction. Finally, Ape House is simply, an enjoyable, addictive read.

As Water for Elefant, I loved Ape House. Sara Gruen is a great author. Her writing style is easy to read, her stories are intriguing. The characters are brilliant and the story line gives you plenty of food for thought. I really like her approach to combine stories of animals and humans. A brilliant book!
