Product Description
Apera Instruments PH60 Pocket pH Tester is designed for reliable and easy pH measurement for general water solutions, such as in hydroponics, horticulture, aquaculture, pools& spas, water treatment, cooling towers, environmental monitoring, beverage making, education, etc. The meter comes with a replaceable pH probe (PH60-E) for general water solutions pH test. The meter is also compatible with 3 other types of pH electrodes and an ORP probe (sold separately) for different applications such as solid samples and surface tests. NOTE: Add a few drops of 3M KCL liquid (included in the kit) to their test sample (usually low ion-strength liquid like distilled water or RO water), which will significantly help accelerate the stabilization without affecting the pH reading.

Reasons I chose Apera: according to reviews and instructions, calibration seems to hold longer than other brands on Amazon. U.S.A. support and website. Company has been around for a while and has in depth information available about them. Apera meter uses AAA batteries (not button batteries.) Everything I need is included in the case. Excellent customer service.
I waited to purchase a pH meter because I was intimidated by the need to calibrate, but I was tired of buying various test strips. That can get expensive...so the cost of the meter was worth it. Calibration is actually very easy. The instruction booklet is clear, and there is also a laminated quick guide that walks you through the steps. I was confused on one step, so I went to the website. There is a chat feature available, and a real person answered to chat with me. This was so helpful, and the instructions given instantly cleared up my misunderstanding. Don't hesitate to buy one of these because of the need to calibrate, it's not that hard and if you are using it regularly, it doesn't need to be done that often.
Storage case is really nice, it holds all the calibration supplies, soaking solution (you put a drop in the cover cup to keep the bulb from drying out, which I guess keeps it calibrated longer), all in a dense foam so I'm not worried about anything breaking. There is a pocket to keep all the papers in, and a phone number for help right on the front of the pocket.
The meter reads quickly and shows a smiley face when the reading is obtained. It also shows temperature, and has a backlight you can turn on if needed.
I collect my dog's urine in a 3 oz plastic cup and dip this meter in it. Then I pour the urine in the toilet, rinse the tip of the meter in tap water, dab it dry, and make sure there is a little moisture on the tip or in the cover cup that protects the tip. Easy! I was originally worried about this type of tip being difficult to clean, but it's not. If I needed to, I could use a soft cleaning brush to do it, but running water has been all I need. There are other tips available if you feel they would work better for your needs.
I would not hesitate to recommend this brand and meter. Apera has a PH20 model that would actually work fine for my needs, but we wanted this model that can read higher pH in case the kids ever need it for chemistry or something. Save yourself the $$ and hassle of test strips and use a meter instead, it really is worth it.

Even if you do it right having to press calibrate while it fluctuates is annoying and should be automatic.
Why do I even need to press enter at all?? It should detect its stable and automatically calibrate and request another ph.. Not make me press anything which risks unstability and a test that never ends... N who was the genius who made the unhold/unlock button the calibrate button?? So if it auto holds in cal mode if I press enter/cal which normally goes to the next test instead it unholds the ph and redoes the test...forever.
The only thing that sort of bugs me about it, and seems in other reviews as well, is that you have to be patient when using this meter. It is a temperature-compensating unit, and unfortunately, the temperature probe is embedded in the head, rather that protruding out into the liquid. So, you have to let it sit in a solution being tested, until the head of the meter equalizes to the ambient temperature of the solution. During my maintenance, I will typically put it in my test cup of glycol, let it sit, go about other tasks, and come back and read it again after it has timed out/turned off. That is usually amble time for it to be temperature stable.
Here's my hints at the most frustration-free usage:
* Using: as stated above, wait with unit in solution being tested until temperature has stabilized--this could take several minutes, depending upon starting ambient of the probe and solution.
* Care: Always store with storage solution in the cap. Its a bit of a pain, as the tiny silicone o-ring on the probe does not seal well, so storage container must always be oriented so unit is stored upright.
* Rinse with water and carefully shake or blow off before testing solutions
* Rinse with storage solution after use, and keep clean solution in the probe storage cap.
*Calibration: keep your cal solutions fresh. Before attempting calibration, keep your cal solutions and the probe in the same room/ambient temperature for a couple hours prior--it will speed up stabilization time prior to accepting cal.
Photo is a random spot-check of cal with 10.01 solution after not being calibrated for about six weeks.
EDIT: 20 Jan 22: I bought this meter 16 August 2019, and probe died two days ago. Ordered new probe for $28 on Amazon and received it today. Calibration went as expected, and I expect to get at or near the same service life out of this probe as well. Instruction sheet claims useful probe life at 12-24 months at the most, and should be changed more often for reliability. I never saw any reason with the first probe to question it. Kept meticulously clean, calibrated about every 60 days. Failed all at once, from old age. Also, I noticed on my new probe there was a second, small black o-ring at the end of the probe where it seals against the man body of the instrument. The original didn’t have the o-ring at all. Probe may have even lasted longer, but after it quit working, I removed it to inspect internally and found moisture, so that may have killed it. Alls well that ends well, its back in service now. Is used typically 5 days a week in samples of ethylene and propylene glycols.

Kopf -> Tisch
PROFI Alternative
