So ontop of my order arriving a week early- This comic is adorable. The art style is different which isn't a bad thing, and it's a neat story on a girl and her cat surviving in a destroyed world. I loved it. :3 (added a photo for you too see more of the art style)

The story feels like a classic SF adventure from the golden age. It could have been an episode of Twilight Zone. We see where endless war has taken a planet to near extinction. The twists at the end was classic too. But all of it is in this artist's unique style. Action scenes are excellent!

This is a fun little graphic novel. Was a little leery in that I am not a big fan of manga, but this is much more "Americanized" in its looks, and reminds me most of Todd Naifeh  Courtney Crumrin Volume 1: The Night Things Special Edition  mixed with some Jim Mahfood  Grrl Scouts Volume 1 . Great coloring.

Yes, the story could be just another well worn "apocalyptic future" type comic, but that is really more of just a backdrop here, and because of the art style and the main character's interactions with her cat the whole thing comes off somewhat lighthearted (well, as much as an apocalyptic book with warring sub-human tribes can be I guess :) ). There is nothing truly groundbreaking, but enough original, different, and quirky aspects to it so that it still seems fresh. This is "comic books" at its most fun, not so serious that it seems overly artsy but still serious enough so that it is more than a glorified newspaper cartoon.

Can't really think of anything negative to say about it except at a 6"x9" size it's a little on the small side, but also looked like it was designed and drawn to be that way. Fun stuff you won't regret! Dark Horse / 88 pages.

I'm absolutely in love with the artwork and usage of color in this book. It's a beautiful concept with a lot more lore than they had time to get into . This could easily have been an outstanding series with plenty to offer, so my only complaint is trying to fit so much of this big idea into such a short book. I'm noticing this has been a consistent problem with graphic novels for me. The level of detail you could get from a regular novel cannot be matched through images, which themselves offer a broader sense of imagery and allow for less descriptive detail. Anyway, back to the book, for what graphic novels typically seem to accomplish in my experience, this one did a good job and it was worth it, if not for the artwork alone.

Andrew MacLean's ApocalyptiGirl is proof that style can move a comic a long way, but substance does really ground a comic. MacClean's art is interesting and the various conceptual apparatuses he lays on his story are also interesting. The character designs are strong and dynamic and the color work is very interesting. That said, while the concept of Aria, and even her relationship to Opera, is strong; her character is inconsistent and those inconsistencies are not justified by the plot. For those who feel that comics are bogged down by narrative techniques such as character development and self-consistency, I am sure this will be quite enjoyable. I, however, found plot felt incredibly rushed and did not earn it's metaphors or it's ending.

Andrew MacLean is an outstanding artist and dynamic storyteller. ApocalyptiGirl is a must-read story with one of a kind art. If you enjoy artists who emphasize shape dynamics and utilize exciting color choices then this book is for you. The art alone makes this a great buy, and a price like this is hard to beat. Andrew will also be releasing a Trade Paperback edition of Head Lopper. If you enjoy this art style, check out Head Lopper and see it amped up even further.

ApocalyptiGirl is not at all like what other things I've been reading lately. I tend to prefer things that are a little light with lots of character development and lots of kickass women, heavy on the playful dialogue when possible. This kind of checked the boxes and was completely different at the same time. This story had an eerie realism to it that kept it from being light, despite the joking and mostly light thoughts of Aria. She is definitely kickass and it's pretty easy to get a sense of who she is. Other reviews have criticized this story for not having enough explanation of what is going on and I actually consider that to be its greatest strength. It reveals without giving you all the dirt. It entices without telling you everything, leaving the reader to fill in the gaps with possible explanations. It keeps a certain distance from current affairs that gives it an almost mythical/parable feel without the preachy tones. So I liked it. Not an all time favorite, but one I'm happy to have added to my library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pasé una tarde muy agradable leyéndolo
Reviewed in Spain on May 12, 2021

ApocalyptiGirl: An Aria for the End Times

More of a 4.5 out of 5, but I rounded up to 5.
This small sized graphic novel has stylized art that you get used to in just a couple of panels. There is just enough action and violence to satisfy those who like action. The world is lush, imaginative, and portrayed in beautiful colours. Just enough is explained and not everything is revealed - enough to leave you feeling satisfied. As soon as I finished, I reread it. I loved the main character Aria and her cat Jelly Beans. I still have some questions, but that's okay. Just another excuse to flip through this gorgeous little book to try and seek the answers.

One of the most beautifully well-drawn, cool-looking apocalyptic landscapes. Andrew Maclean gives you everything : huge action panels, immersive colors and an authentic female character. Also, a kitten is always a win.

5.0 out of 5 stars Una chica estelar!
Reviewed in Mexico on August 12, 2017
