I do lots of voiceover work. This is the mic I am using for most of my auditions. The setup is easy, just remember that on the IPAD/IPOD, go to the privacy section and make sure your audio application is allowing the use of a mic. The mic is small but it is good at isolating background sounds and focusing on the voice.

I do English and Spanish voiceover work and with the rolling r's and using the letter S, a pop filter is mandatory. For English the pop filter will soften the S and T as well. I still use my EV RE20 for final production but if you have a great voice studio, you could possibly use this for final production.

I wish the included cords were longer. I also wish it had an included headphone jack for monitoring.

Having said that it still deserves 5 stars.

This is a great purchase for a room studio or an on-the-go studio quality microphone. I purchased mine off of Apple.com along with my Macbook Pro with Retina Display. Regardless of where it is purchased from, it sure is a great quality microphone. I can plug it into my Macbook Pro and Record. It comes VERY NICELY packaged. The inside of the box comes with:
1 - Apogee MiC 96k Professional Quality Microphone
1 - Desk Tripod to screw in the microphone for on-the-go recording
1 - IOS Lightning Adapter (For iPhone 5 which means it is NOT the 30-pin adapter; which would be on the iPhone 4 and 4s)
1 - Mac USB Adapter
1 - Microphone Stand Adapter
1 - Quick Start Guide (generally I don't read these but I am glad I read this. It had a ton of information that really helped!)

So that's what's in the box. Now, for the full fledged review. I started recording the day I got it. It sounded truly studio quality. I had a great amount of doubt in this product at the beginning before I opened it. Then I took it out of the box, read the quick start guide (I'm telling you... READ THE QUICK START GUIDE), then I set my gain to the appropriate frequency, and boy was I surprised! This is a "top shelf" product. If you are in the market for a microphone, GET THIS!!!!!

With this product, I chose to also purchase some studio equipment, which can get pretty expensive. I would recommend purchasing these products because they accommodate very well with the microphone without having to break the bank.

The On Stage Stands MS7701B Tripod Boom Microphone Stand - This stand would adapt extremely well with the microphone. Especially when you want to do some acoustic recording and want the mic right at your disposal.

(I'm reviewing this as an iphone user, but this mic also works with ipads and Apple computers.)

I bought my first smart phone a couple weeks ago, and chose the iphone simply because it was smaller than most of the others I was interested in and would fit in my pocket. I'd heard of garageband but thought it was probably a toy app. Then I found reviews of the Apogee Mic which, when combined with an iphone and garageband, could actually record very good sound. That's when I got excited about my new phone!
I've bought thousands of dollars worth of home recording gear over the last 25 years, including several microphones, but the sound that I get from this Apogee Mic 96k with a bit of Garageband reverb is better than most of the sound that I've gotten in the past. I'm no professional engineer, and probably made a lot of mistakes with my other complicated equipment, but this iphone/garageband/Apogee Mic combo is dead easy and great sounding. The main control to set is the gain switch on the mic itself.
I was initially going to buy the original Apogee Mic for $199, but I needed the lightning cable and didn't think that one came with it. I also wanted a mic stand adapter. This 96k version comes with both those things for less money than if I'd bought them separately with the cheaper mic. I'm guessing this is the exact same mic except this one is able to record at higher quality if your software supports it, which iphone garageband doesn't. Both versions come with a tabletop tripod, and you can use any generic camera tripod if you have one.
I think this setup is perfect for the person who wants to do fairly simple but good sounding recordings.

I have a radio show and also do occasional updates pushing to Soundcloud, etc. This microphone is great. I originally got the Blue microphone that connects into an iPhone, but I did not like that quality as much. This microphone is heavy, dense, and produces great spoken word sound.

The gain option works very well for being able to get a great sound up close in a noisy area. Hold the mic four to sixes inches away when the gain is all the way down.

The one downside is, at the price point, it should have come with a pop filter for it. I put a sock over it, but it should have come with something. It's a great mic, but popping p's is a problem.

Overall, I like this mic. However, I do like it more with the iPad than with the Mac Air. There isn't a noise floor with the iPad but I notice one when in Garage Band on my Air. I'm not fond of having to go to Audacity for editing so I use this more with the more for on the go and the Rode NT-1 at home.
