As a connoisseur of home remedies and a lover of good booze - this book is dead on! I wasn't sure what to expect, just sounded interesting but super pleasantly surprised by it's contents. Beautifully laid out and considerately spiral bound so easy to flip open and follow a recipe; It is a serious, 'for what ails you' book with remedies of yesteryear that can be applied to today. I never even thought about restorative properties that some drinks can have involving alcohol and this book makes me view apples differently for keeping the doctor away.

A sure bet, really happy I fell upon it.

The recipes are great, but I often find myself lacking one ingredient per recipe (sometimes the main liquor!) Below is a list of some of the ingredients that I suspect most won’t have immediately on hand:

• Chartreuse VEP — $160+ per 1L (only size I have found) bottle. I’m sure most sub standard Chartreuse, but it is quite presumptious
• Curry bitters — I have more bitters than most and even this was a little out there
• Rock candy swizzle stick
• Rhubarb tea liqueur
• Aquavit
• Calvados (I sub Applejack)
• Zwack
• Lemon balm
• Mead
• Raki
• Rhum Agricole

When I was a kid and caught a cold, my mother would always fix me a Hot Toddy with honey, lemon, hot water and Irish whiskey. They tasted so good, that it was almost worth the misery of getting and being sick. Now Warren Bobrow has supplied a litany of cocktails that will surely be the cure for what ails you. He captures the right amount of cocktail history along with the holistic rationale for the herbs, spices and mixers as well as the spirits themselves. Unlike the plethora of cocktail books that are out there, this one is well researched, informative and lots of fun.

This is not just another cocktail book. It really is specific to the apothecary, healing aspect that is the history of so many concoctions that were our medicine before 'big-pharma' took over with a pill for everything. The spiral binding is to me a must for any books to really be used and not just sit on the shelf, and this one will get used. The pictures are fabulous. Warren knows his photography.

I especially love the recipes. Very few ingredients that are nearly impossible to get. Generic specification of the base spirit, allowing the focus to shift to the other ingredients that make this a true apothecary experience.

This book goes to the top of my list, both for history of cocktails, original purpose of many liqueurs, and just a beautiful presentation of cocktails I look forward to enjoying, even if they will be for those times when under the weather.

This book is very informative and interesting, with different drinks than you would find in a regular bartender book. It is also filled with info about drinks throughout history, and from different parts of the world. It's a step up from "the history of the margarita", or anything like that. This would be a great theme for a party to make different drinks for guests to sample and compare! All in the spirit of "healing", of course!

Mr. Bobrow is no stranger to mixed drinks of all varieties being something of an expert Mixologist.
However, "Apothecary Cocktails: Restorative Drinks from Yesterday and Today" is so much more than a collection of recipes...it delves into the history of restorative, calming, warming, cooling, even pain-relieving tinctures and elixirs (medicines by any other name) that have been used for centuries (if not longer) and brings them sharply into the focus of the modern world.

At a time when many folks are looking for more "natural" relief from ailments, these are some you can mix in your own kitchen; as the Apothecaries and Healers did millennia before the advent of "pharmaceuticals".

Not only is the book informative, but beautifully presented in a format reminiscent of the eras it hearkens to; with attention to the text and layout as much as the beautiful 21st century photos...AND it looks just as wonderful in the Kindle Edition as the printed one!

"Apothecary Cocktails: Restorative Drinks from Yesterday and Today" is a must read for anyone interested in the history of Medicine, Natural "cures", or a collection of interesting drinks to try at your next gathering.

Thanks to this gem, many of my favorite subjects have collided--recipes, health, cocktails and history--and I'm so very glad about it! Warren Bobrow's nifty tome not only satisfies the palate with delicious recipes, it pleases the eye with beautifully shot color photos, and educates the mind about how and why these potent potables will soothe both body and soul. The overall look of "Apothecary Cocktails" will also please those of us who appreciate vintage, because while it looks like a beloved pre-Prohibition heirloom it's firmly modern modern by thoughtfully hiding a spiral spine under a hard cover (no broken book spine to despair over...thank you!!). It's a handsome addition to the bar, reference bookshelf or coffee table.

I was surprised by the early arrival of this book. At first glance I was shocked and pleased that it is not all about drinks, but includes many traditional recipes for comfort foods. You need his in your library collection!!!!!!
