“Like the Spenser books, it’s a study of Parker’s enduring themes: buddy relationships, the weight that honor and responsibility put on a man, the consequences of violence, the way good can shade into bad and vice versa…a melancholy and sometimes moving tale of a lost but fascinating era.”—The Seattle Times
“Dryly amusing…a conclusion that had to make Parker smile as much as his readers will.”—Los Angles Times
“[Parker] takes total command of the genre, telling a galloping tale…[a] classic western… magnificent. As always, the writing is bone clean. One of Parker’s finest.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)
“For…readers with a hankering for the Wild West, including a high-noon shootout and all the accoutrements.”—USA Today
“Beneath the trappings of this gunfighter novel, Parker really has something to say about the nature of men and women in the Old West. Highly recommended.”—Library Journal
“As always, [Parker] is a master…his plot gallops to a perfect, almost mythical ending. Like a great gunfighter, Parker makes it look easy.”—St. Petersburg Times
“If Spenser and Hawk had been around when the West was wild, they’d have talked like Cole and Hitch. Wonderful stuff: notch 51 for Parker.”—Kirkus Reviews

After reading "Shrink Rap," I just knew that I wanted to read more books by Robert B. Parker and I was not disappointed. This guy is a master story teller and talented writer!
Appaloosa, also made into a move, is the first of a Western trilogy, followed by Resolution and Brimstone. Not realizing that, I read Brimstone first. I quickly downloaded "Resolution" and "Appaloosa" to my Kindle 2 reader and could not wait to get back in the saddle again with main characters Virgil Cole, Everett Hitch, and Allie French. All three and the rival characters are extremely well developed and believable.
Hired by town aldermen, the main good guy quick draw Virgil Cole is not as book smart has his West Point sidekick Everett Hitch; however, he is the wise hero that can always be counted on to just know what to do. The loyalty between the two is incredible. Allie French gets into the thick of things and Virgil's head as his not so faithful lover.
The rival in this story is a thug greedy rancher, Randall Bragg, who murdered the previous Sheriff and is terrorizing the townsfolk. His two hired gunslingers have skills thought to be equal to Virgil Cole's. Gunplay is inevitable.
The author's vivid action packed novel places the reader on the scene as this rapidly moving fiction unravels.
This book is captivating and leaving you hungry to read the next in the series. Buy it today. I am sure you will enjoy it as much as I did.
you cannot stop after just one.
everyone i've given these to (and i make sure to lend all 4 at once) has read them in one sitting:
one after the other.
and then wanted more.
alas, there are no more written by parker.
(the 5th posthumously completed by someone else is no-where near as good as these 4.)
do yourself a favor and read these (even if you do not like westerns and even if you do not like parkers other work.)
