Despite Apple insisting that this card does not work with the 2008 Mac Pro (MacPro 3,1) I decided to take a chance and order the card because the machine meets all of the required hardware specifications. I looked at the actual technical requirements like slot type and power availability based on the AMD/ATI information, not just what Apple officially publishes. I put the card into the machine and it works great. I ran a simple OpenCL ray tracing application and was very pleased by the performance. One thing that is not explicitly made clear without research is that the card requires two 6-pin power connections. As such, it is not possible to install more than one of these cards in your computer, at least on the model I have, however the instructions indicate that the situation may be the same for the 2009 and 2010 models that this card is advertised for.

Also, the card I received looks like the card that is under the smaller one as shown in the picture. It is around 12 inches long and will span the entire length of the PCI bay. For nontechnical people, these are double-wide cards and you should probably install the card in slot one, the lowest slot, if you need to use the other PCIe slots as it will cover the adjacent slot if installed in slot two or three. It will not work in slot four, the uppermost slot, because of its size.

Another reviewer mentions using this card as well as the old card in his computer. (As an aside, there is no "Late 2008" Mac Pro. The 3,1 was the only model released in 2008 and it was produced until March 2009.) This is not recommended as there will be no performance increase as the cards will not work together.

Was a major upgrade for my 2009 Mac Pro 4,1 replacing the original stock nvdia 120 card. Took extra research to find this one as the 5770 was a much more popular (affordable) upgrade for the tower. However, the 5870 is quieter and seems to generate less heat than it's predecessor. My card was refurbished but done so in a way as to almost appear new. My tower was a little sluggish after the upgrade from Snow Leopard to El Capitan, the 5870 along with RAM upgrade returned that responsive snappier feel I was used to.

Apple doesn't say this graphics card is supported for anything past 2009. But the posts and blogs all said it would work in a 2006 Dual Core Mac Pro version 1,1, so I gambled.
It arrived today and it's installed. A new monitor is on the way....but even my 10 year old Apple Cinema screen looks immensely better. Aperture and Final Cut Pro both show improvements.

While tens of thousands of Mac users await a new Mac Pro in 2012, along with me, at least I've updated my old system to the latest specs and I'm happy.
When the new Pro comes out, I'll keep this system for legacy editing projects and get a few more years out of it.

I purchased this card to replace the one that comes from the factory in my MacPro 2009. It came on time, in very protected (thank god). It came in a box within a box within a box. I replace it in my MacPro2009 right away; it took less than 5 minutes. So far so good. The card is working perfect;y so far, and I'm really happy. Maya and Mudbox never worked so smoothly in my computer ever. Have to test it with Final Cut, but I'm sure it will be the same.
I'm very satisfied, with pretty much everything.

excellent upgrade graphics card. I put this graphics card into a 2009 Mac Pro and removed the slower card that came originally with the computer. Apple was selling this card with their Mac Pros until they stopped making the Mac Pro (tower) in I believe 2013. The card runs quiet, is very powerful, and from the reviews I have read is not an energy hog or a massive heat producer. less than a 5 minute install on my 2009 Mac Pro

Even though not part of required specs, research indicated.that this card would work with my macpro. Since I had to upgrade to an open GL card to run Final Cut Pro X, this card made most sense. Installation was easy and took less then 15 minutes thanks to good Youtube instructions. Turn on power and both my screens worked even though I ultimately ended up running my primary screen from the new card and my secondary screen from the original card. A very significant improvement in speed on all video content applications.

Yes it works on a 2008 mac (3.1) but my system was not happy. Did some bench marks with the recommended board 5770 and the same numbers come up. Although like previous reviews says, an older mac will work with the 5870, when I tried to use my 3D software it slowed down to a crawl and had starts and stops and a couple crashes. I think it has something to do with the bus.

Fortunately I had previously ordered the ATI 5770 and decided to order the 5870 because it was faster. Lucky for me I replaced with the 5770 ran a benchmark test and the speed is the same! I kept the 5770 and sent the 5870 back to the seller.

Apple is right the 5870 is to be used on newer macs and not on later 2008 quad cores. I have a dual processor quad core 2.8. and the 5770 works much better and open GL is much faster now.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS BOARD FOR OLDER MACS LIKE SOME REVIEWERS SAY. AT LEAST IF YOU ARE USING MODO, VUE AND ZBRUSH. PHOTOSHOP SEEMS TO WORK FINE. I DON'T USE VIDEO SOFTWARE. THE ATI 5770 WORKS GREAT AND MAKES SCREEN REDRAW MUCH FASTER.
