It's the only answer to an older Cinema Display and a newer Mac. Unfortunately, it's expensive, bulky, requires use of one of my precious USB ports and yet another electric outlet. Also, when my Mac goes to sleep, neither USB port on the rear of my 23" Cinema Display works. AND, because I have a "white-light Cinema Display" (i.e. the power button has a white glowing light behind it rather than a green glowing light), the button will no longer work as a power-on button. It just sort of pulses white light when you touch it. So there's that. Still, I'm able to use my "old" (c. 2004) display with a new Intel-based Mac Mini, which means a lot to these old eyes. btw, you might think you can get one of the other "DVI to ADC" cables that come up with a search here - but take close look at the male and female ends - as far as I can tell they're really ADC to DVI, i.e., for a newer DVI display to an older ADC Mac.

I have one of these that I use to hook up a 22" Apple Cinema Display to my BFGTech 260 GTX video card on my standard PC. Basically this works the opposite of the cheap adapters, that which are for hooking up a laptop or desktop with an ADC port to a standard monitor with DVI in. I wouldn't have gone this way but the guy who sold me his old Cinema Display threw it in for free, and it does "just work".

Also, if you don't intend to use those USB ports on the back of your monitor you can skip plugging in the USB cable. The only downside is this hookup doesn't seem to allow the power button on your Apple Cinema Display to turn off.

One last note of caution, if you do not have an Apple Cinema Display with an ADC cable that you want to plug into a DVI-out on your video card, you don't need this item. In fact you only need it for 3 of the Apple Cinema Displays made in the last decade, models: M8149, M8536, and A1038. These are all polycarbonate models (i.e. they use the white plastic, not the aluminum body). Your model number is typically on the back near the bottom in super tiny type.

Also, the box is huge, I threw it on the ground behind my case, but if you put this on your desktop, be prepared, it's as large as a standard router or cable modem.

I bought a new mac Mini and desired to use my screen from an old G5 that had an ADC male connection. I needed a male ADC to a male DVI connector that would connect to a DVI to HDMI converter. No one at the Apple store could help. So I went on line to the Amazon blogs and comments about this adapter. After much search I concluded this was the only adapter that might work. I am happy to report that it works great except for the on/off switch on the screen. All of the USB ports on the screen and keyboard work as well. Apple built this adapter for another purpose. Who knew it would help me avoid planned obsolescence.

Gosh, remember when people would solder boards in their moms basement and write codes themselves? How about when the only personal computers available all had proprietary products usually soldered to the board? NO? Me either, I was born in the 80's... Nevertheless, a very small amount of companies still do proprietary nonsense in their manufacturing. That model was ditched a LONG time ago in favor of the more industry and end-user friendly plug-and-play standards... it's also been proven to be more profitable.

Apple still does a lot of proprietary nonsense like having a monitor that draws it's power from a non-standard DVI jack... In some ways it's ok to do this, but in most it's just dumb. So a computer donated to our school had this socket on the back. There was a nice Apple Cinema monitor with it, both Apple products... GREAT, QUALITY. well, yes and no. The cinema monitor and computer are great, but they don't like each other, because the tower has a proprietary socket that was abandoned after a couple years by Apple.

This all means that I had to find out why it didn't work, and then figure out how to make it work. I had to buy this nifty cable which works great... and since this is a review of the cable, not of Apple, I give it 5 stars. Honestly though, it's a bad business model that uses unprofitable, and dead practices, which force an end user to buy an adapter to fix a companies mistake.

The build quality is great for this product and Apple products in general, just frustrating having to buy this.

Apple M8661LL/B DVI to ADC Display Adapter 4038234011420 works great and looks cool, i give it my 5 super stars, its very easy to set up and you can put it just about anywhere, i just love it when a product is intelligent but simple, how ever i think it's too expensive, apple needs to bring the price way down, then it will be perfect.

This unit was easy to hook up and allowed my Mac Mini Mid-2010 model to work with a vintage Apple Cinema Display. It took less than 5 minutes to hook up and the moment I powered on my Mac Mini it recognized the Cinema Display and has a great picture. You will have to have an adapter to go from the mini video port on the Mini to DVI.

I bought this item so I could run my Macintosh 22 inch Cinema display from my new Radeon 9800 card. Simple plug and play, and forget about it. It works.
