The standard Garage Band 'Grand Piano' sounded just "OK", and there was no harpsichord. Those were my prime reasons for ordering this Jam Pack... and to have fun with the other sounds, of course.
The Steinway Piano in this pack is substantially better than the standard Garage Band piano. Neither is perfect - but this Steinway is great for the price. The difference is more than the soft hammer sound of a Steinway vs a hardened hammer sound of the standard piano. The velocity response and the behavior of sustained notes is much more realistic. The default settings have a fair amount of reverb - to simulate a concert hall. Adjusting that and other sliders can give a sound more appropriate to other settings.
It still does not sound like a real grand piano of course - there are no induced harmonics when the sustain pedal is depressed, for example. But, not bad at all.
The harpsichord is pretty disappointing in comparison.Read more ›
I would have like a LOT more articulations too. Most instruments are capable of subtle but noticeable variations on their playing techniques that ALL modern orchestral pieces exploit. If anything, the percussion comes off best here as different velocities produce marked changes. Well? Why not in the pitched instruments too? The differences are not all that marked, especially with reed instruments.
I would gladly pay another $50 (at least) to have a much wider spectrum of sounds here. It's NOT disappointing - more frustrating as the samples provided are pretty good and just wet your appetite for more. It is NOT a totally fulfilling package, regrettably. More please - MUCH more!!!
Apparently the best way to get this now, as well as all the other Jam Packs, is to buy Logic Pro 9. The complete package is the same price as two Jam Packs used to be. No wonder they were discontinued!

Was looking forward to this Jam Pack but found I was sent two blank discs. While the discs are very workable as coffee cup holders, they are not worth the overall price. Read morePublished on March 6, 2014 by Vincent J. Mulvihill
