Top Customer Reviews

Pros:
-Aesthetically pleasing
-Integrated USB cable
-Two additional USB ports
-Driverless (at least under 10.2.8, which is what I'm using), hot swappable
-Adjustable foot for increased or reduced angling
Cons:
-Minor discrepancies that notebook users may find initially annoying
-Tactile response, while good, is not the best
-Cord is too short
-No power key
I use this keyboard with my OS X 10.2.8 based PowerBook, and overall, I'm very pleased. There are some odd glitches, such as the fact that the key repeat rate is slower on this keyboard than on the PowerBook's integrated keyboard, and the tactile response isn't ideal for high-speed touch-typists like myself. On a good keyboard, I can reach about 130 words per minute, but this keyboard doesn't give me the right "feel" for me to hit speeds like that.
If you're used to using your notebook's integrated keys for controlling your notebook's sound or display, you may be initially disoriented by the arrangement of the keys. Turning your notebook display's brightness up or down is possible with this keyboard, for example, but the keys that do it aren't labeled -- I discovered it purely by accident thru experimentation. And where's the function key? Granted, it's not critical -- perhaps not even needed at all -- but I'd still like to have it available to me. The keyboard doesn't have a power key, either, meaning you'll have to use the Mac's power key.
The cord, at only thirty-two inches, is *much* too short. Be aware of this limitation, especially if (for example) you're thinking of plugging this keyboard into the back of a tower that's sitting on the floor behind your desk.
On the upside, the keyboard is very handsome and comfortable to use.

I am using this keyboard with my Win XP PC and it works perfectly. It fortunately came with a USB extension cord. It is quite stylish but this inadvertently makes my Logitech mouse and Viewsonic monitor look sadly ancient. My only real complaint would be that it isn't equipped with a pair of feet to increase the keyboard angle.

Compared with a decent Microsoft PC keyboard, I noticed that on the Apple keyboard (1) the distance between the surfaces of two adjacent keys is shorter, (2) the surface of each key is flatter, and (3) the height difference between an unpressed and pressed key seems smaller. This gives the keyboard a softer/fuzzier feel that some people might not like or might need a little time to adjust to.

As an technology industry pro for almost 30 years, I've seen the good, the bad and the ugly on the keyboard front. Quite simply, this is the best keyboard ever made. In fact, the last one, I wore out those little nubs on the J and F keys, so I just replaced my old one that looked like something was living inside with this identical unit. This time, I bought two, so I have a spare in another five years when this new replacement wears down. The old keyboard still works fine, except for the wear on the key tops, which you'd expect after five years of 14 hour a day use. I'll put that one in my EMP trash can as my emergency spare, since there's absolutely nothing wrong with it except for wear on the keycaps. It will survive nuclear war and massive solar flares as my spare... ;-)

It functions flawlessly, has just the right amount of key play and it's a perfect fit for my hands. Not much else I can add. Go buy one now before Apple decides to quit making them.

Before I even start reviewing, allow me to express how disappointed I am in people who use the "review" section for reviewing sellers. That is what SELLER FEEDBACK is for, and because of their lack of attention to detail an incredible keyboard is getting a low star rating. Rant over.

INTRODUCTION
Now, I know this keyboard is starting to get old. Since this was in its hay day, Apple has obviously come out with the aluminum keyboard to complete the iMac/Macbook Pro aesthetic, and there's no denying that they have designed a beautiful keyboard. That said, this keyboard is by no means ugly, and I would argue that it still looks better than any brand-new Dell keyboard...but aesthetics is always subjective.

FUNCTIONALITY
Now, the reason why I say this is the best Apple keyboard ever, is entirely down to the way I can type on this keyboard. The tactile feedback, as well as the spacing and shape of the keys, make this the ideal keyboard for a fast typer. On my macbook pro (which has the flat keyboard like the new external keyboards) I type around 76WPM (words per minute). On the white Pro keyboard, my WPM is easily 85-90. Sure I sound like a jackhammer due to my being a less than light with my typing, but I work from home so it's not like I am annoying anyone (ok maybe my dog...)

DESIGN
The two USB ports on the side are ideal for a mouse and a USB drive, and are a testament to Apple's desire to completely satisfy an end-user's needs. It is important to note, however, that the USB port is only powerful enough for the aforementioned devices. You cannot sync an iPhone, for example, because it wants to draw a charge and your OS will alert you that the port is overloaded. For devices that are self-powered though, the USB ports are very handy!
