PROS- software is beyond simple to use & organize even without any reading of directions..it just works....truly superior for large & lengthy audiobooks, mega storage, seems very durable (though i have a great case to protect it)
i still need to explore the other features but out of the box it was easy to use.
CONS- compared to the zune 120 the ipod classic 160 the sound quality is a big loss...i have some really good surround buds that worked great with my zune but sound flat with my ipod...the sound is very good when played through my kenwood head unit in my car but i could never use the zune with the kenwood so i can not compare.
i did download a movie just for kicks but it was what i expected the small screen kills it & the zune's screen was larger & even without the HD the zune worked well.
over all what i truly wanted was exactly what i found in the ipod 160 classic, ease of use, massive storage & the best option for an audiobook nut like me
I just wish Apple didn't give-up on the iPod Classic.
If you want a device that will last you for many years of entertainment, look no further.
I have had to budget space for what I want on my iPod for too long, finally after five generations of Nano's I switched to the Classic, todays model @ 160 gigabytes. I opened the box and stared in horror, it was HUGE! The classic is much larger than the Nano, we all know it, and I expected it, but wow! It's big! It took a day or two to get over the size difference as compared to the Nano, but you get over it quickly, I promise!
160 gigabytes is MASSIVE! After syncing it and loading all my books, movies, and music, I'm using only half the capacity! The battery life is phenomenal, and watching a movie while waiting for a doctors appointment etc. is actually pretty good to my surprise. I miss the size of the Nano, I miss the speaker built into the Nano, but thats all. After a few days the size did not bother me anymore.
The only things I miss are;
*Flash memory, it's almost instant and you get used to it. The Classic is a disc drive and it needs a second or so to respond to commands and load the song, book, movie, etc. It turns out that this is very difficult to get used too, but not impossible, or even inconvenient after a while.
*A built in speaker, If they could fit one into a little Nano why not in this big boy? It seems a minor thing, but I liked using it and miss it.
Overall the iPod Classic is a retro design that is still manageable in size and mighty in ability and storage. The battery life is absolutely fantastic. Love the room for everything in my iTunes entertainment center, whole seasons of my favorite TV shows, movies, books.....
What drove me to buy when I did was the concern that the Classic may be discontinued. It's not selling very well when compared to the Nano and the Touch, both use the faster flash memory, but the Nano has too little storage, and the Touch with even more flash memory and a giant screen for videos and games, and a very hefty price tag.
Someday the iPod Classic will disappear and the great retro mp3 player that started it all will be worth some money!
I have now used this ipod for over a year. It is one of my most precious possessions. It continues to hold its charge for days despite near-daily use. I just recently bought some Grado headphones, and learned that the 128kps tracks are missing important data. I am re-ripping that music, and the higher bit-rate music files sound amazing! Yes, those higher bit-rate tracks require more space, but I have the space available on this little gem so I don't have to worry. I have no buyer's remorse on this purchase.
