I have been relying on these reviews for my own purchase decisions for many years. I recently started posting reviews because I am disabled and have free time. I hope my reviews are helpful. I only post a review after I have used the product for an adequate amount of time to have a basis for an opinion and I update my reviews if my opinion changes. If you found my review to be helpful, please check the "yes" box. If I find that my reviews aren't helping anybody then I'll stop and find a better use for my time. Thank you and good luck. 😀
I have used a lot of different styli but never a professional graphic artist version. I have used a lot of regular styli for iPhone's over the year but the closest experience I've had to the Apple Pencil has been the Surface Tablet Pen. While the Surface Tablet Pen was great and impressive it didn't have quite the same feeling when dragging it across the glass to write or sketch. It felt more tappy and slick for me while the Apple Pencil has just the littlest bit of friction that really makes the experience feel a little more like writing on paper. The Surface Pen felt about as accurate and I appreciated the eraser features and buttons on the Pen that the Apple Pencil doesn't have.
If you've ever used a regular stylus on a touchscreen before, you know how clunky and inaccurate that can be. The Apple Pencil far and away surpasses any of those styli in accuracy and general feel. It is how I always imagined a good stylus would be but none of those earlier styli ever really met my expectations.
The Apple Pencil comes with the Pencil, a magnetic cap for the lightning plug, an extra tip, and an adapter to plug your pencil in with a lightning cable. I have charged it once for maybe 15 minutes and have plugged it in for a minute here and there and have never run out of power yet. It is very smooth and well balanced and the tip has a slightly rubbery/hard plastic feel that adds the bit of friction that makes it feel as though you're writing on paper. The tip screws off although I have not had issues with mines to need replacement yet.
While I really like the Apple Pencil there are a few major issues I have with it. You may get a very nice and premium product but you pay a very nice and premium price for something that seems very simple on the outside. Considering it adds a lot to your experience with the iPad Pro it would have been a nice thing to include for a little more money or charge a bit less as a better selling point for the new devices that use it.
My second issue deals with the form over function approach. The pencil looks nice because it is so simple but elegant in a way. However, it is also so simple and I find it a bit ridiculous to have an easily lost magnetic cap to cover the lightning plug. Also, to keep up with the clean design, there are no buttons which means there is no erase function in the Pencil itself. I liked that feature with the Surface Pen and maybe if I hadn't used it, the lack of it on the Apple Pencil wouldn't have bothered me but it I did and it does. Finally regarding the design, the Pencil is just too slick and doesn't offer a good grip area for extended use. So while the Pencil is clean, sleek, and elegant, it is also slick, buttonless, and with a cap that will get lost.
Despite my issues with the Pencil it adds so much to the iPad Pro devices that I can't imagine anyone not taking advantage of it with those devices. It works and it works well and it will change your entire perspective of using a stylus on your iPads. If the price doesn't bother you then this is easy to recommend for your iPad Pro.
