Product Description

Back up a lifetime's worth of memories with AirPort Time Capsule, a wireless hard drive that works seamlessly with Time Machine in OS X. It's also a full-featured Wi-Fi base station with the latest 802.11ac technology and simultaneous dual-band support. AirPort Time Capsule includes a 2TB hard drive that works with Time Machine in OS X to create the perfect no-hassle backup solution. There are no cables, and you can back up all the Mac computers in your home to a central location automatically, wirelessly, and in the background.

With 802.11ac technology and a powerful beamforming antenna array, AirPort Time Capsule gives you up to 3x faster Wi-Fi and a stronger, clearer signal. And because it transmits at both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies at the same time, your wireless devices will automatically connect to the best available band for the fastest performance possible. With the antennas at the top of the elevated design, AirPort Time Capsule now has a higher platform for dispersing the signal. Also the number of antennas has increased. There are now six of them three for the 2.4GHz band and three for the 5GHz band. Together with 802.11ac technology, they let you connect faster, farther, and with more power than ever before.

Connect your DSL or cable modem to AirPort Time Capsule and use the built-in setup assistant to create your new wireless network in just a few taps from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. If you're using a Mac, use the built-in AirPort Utility. Setup is fast & easy. Any Wi-Fi device you have will work with AirPort Time Capsule. That's because it's compatible with devices using the 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n, & 802.11ac specifications. Since AirPort Time Capsule features a built-in firewall that protects your network from malicious Internet attacks, you can enjoy the web with peace of mind.

System Requirements - Setup and Administration - Mac with OS

Amazon.com

With the AirPort Time Capsule, backing up your Mac couldn't be simpler. It works with Time Machine in OS X to automatically and wirelessly back up your data to its 2 TB hard drive, so you never have to worry about losing anything important. And the AirPort Time Capsule doubles as a Wi-Fi base station with next-generation 802.11ac technology, for speeds up to 3x faster than the previous 802.11n standard. It's easy to set up and highly secure, letting you share your broadband Internet connection, a USB printer, or a hard drive. And the new vertical design has a smaller footprint, so it saves desk space, as well as your files.

The Airport Time Capsule is also available in a 3 TB model.

Automatic Wireless Backup

With AirPort Time Capsule, you get a superfast Wi‑Fi base station and an easy-to-use backup device all in one. Backing up your data couldn't be easier -- just set it up once and AirPort Time Capsule does the rest. Every photo, file, song, app, and OS X setting is saved, so you never have to worry about losing anything important again.

AirPort Time Capsule is designed to partner seamlessly with Time Machine in OS X Leopard or later to protect your data. They work together smartly so that after the initial backup, only the files you’ve changed are backed up -- automatically, wirelessly, and in the background. If you have multiple Mac computers in your home or office, you can back up and store files for each Mac -- no more need to attach an external drive to each Mac every time you want to back up.

80211ac

802.11ac: The New Definition of Fast

With three-stream 802.11ac technology, the AirPort Extreme Base Station can reach data rates of up to 1.3 Gbps (based on theoretical peak speeds) -- up to three times faster than 802.11n Wi‑Fi. You also get double the channel bandwidth, with 80 MHz-wide channels providing more room for more data to flow faster than ever. And if you have 802.11a/b/g/n devices, AirPort Extreme maximizes that connection as well.

It features simultaneous dual-band 802.11ac Wi‑Fi, which transmits at both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies at the same time. That means your devices automatically connect to the best available band for the fastest possible performance.

Beamforming Puts the Focus on Your Device

The new AirPort Extreme Base Station features the intelligent, powerful beamforming antenna array. Most base station antennas emit an equal and constant Wi‑Fi signal in all directions. But the beamforming antenna array is smarter -- it knows where an 802.11ac device is on the network. Then AirPort Extreme targets its signal to that device, so your Wi‑Fi signal is stronger, clearer, and faster.

Connect to Wi‑Fi from Any Device

Mac. PC. iPhone. iPad. Apple TV. Really, any Wi‑Fi-enabled device you have will work with AirPort Extreme. That's because it's compatible with devices using the 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n, and 802.11ac specifications.

Gigabit Ethernet

In addition to Wi-Fi networking, the AirPort Extreme Base Station includes three Gigabit Ethernet ports for fast wired connectivity with desktop computers, network drives, and more.

Sharing a Hard Drive

The AirPort Extreme can turn an external USB hard drive into a drive you can share with all the users on your network and access securely over the Internet. This feature--AirPort Disk--is a simple and convenient way to share files among everyone in your family, office, or class.

Just connect the external hard drive to the USB port on the back of your AirPort Extreme and all the documents, videos, photos, and other files on the drive instantly become available to anyone on the secure network -- whether they use a Mac or a PC.

Wireless Printing

With its wireless printing capabilities, you can plug a printer into the AirPort Extreme, add it to the printer list on your Mac or PC, and start printing -- all without a cable tethered to a computer. AirPort Extreme uses the Mac- and PC-compatible Bonjour networking technology to let everyone on the network take advantage of one centrally available printer.

If you want to share a hard drive as well as share a printer across a network, you can connect a USB hub to the AirPort Extreme and attach your devices to the hub. Share both a printer and a hard drive, multiple printers, multiple hard drives, or a combination.

In my household we have a MacBook Air, 2 PC's, 2 iPhones, and an iPad. For a long time I've wanted a shared storage drive that would always be on so all my computers and iOS devices could access it wirelessly at any time. The new Apple Time Capsule has finally given me that. In addition, the wireless internet speed of my network is 50% faster.

NETWORK SET UP
Setting up the Time Capsule for the internet was extremely easy. My iPad immediately recognized the Time Capsule after I connected it to the modem and plugged it in. On the iPad I created the network name and password. I also created a guest network name and password. The Time Capsule updated this and I was up and running. From pulling it out of the box to surfing the internet was less than 5 minutes.

INTERNET SPEED TEST
After I connected all my computers and iOS devices to the new network I did a speed test with the app Speedtest.net on my iPhone. I had an inexpensive Belkin wireless N router before getting the new Time Capsule and was curious to know if and by how much my internet download and upload speed improved with the Time Capsule. With my old wireless router and the iPhone next to it my download speed was 27 mbps and my upload speed was 8 mbps. At about 35 feet away from the Belkin router my download speed was 22 mbps and my upload speed was 7 mbps. With the Time Capsule and the iPhone next to it my download speed improved to 40 mbps and my upload speed was 10 mbps. At about 35 feet away from the Time Capsule my download speed improved to 38 mbps and my upload was 10 mbps. Overall with the new Time Capsule my internet speed got 50% faster. I was most impressed with the speed since my internet subscription is only for 30 mbps.

I just replaced a very old Linksys router to extend my existing network that's currently being powered by a 4th Gen airport extreme base station. While I do think this is a very well made product, there are things you need to consider before putting down a several hundred dollars on a piece of equipment.

1. Do you need a network storage device? If not, stop reading and look into another product like the airport extreme.

2. Do you have a wireless device that supports 802.11ac? If you have one or know that you're getting one soon, great. If not, you are probably better off saving the extra $50 on sticking with a 5th gen time capsule.

3. Do you plan on mounting this? I have my current AEBS mounted in the patch closet using the TotalMount - AirPort Extreme Mounting Kit (Compatible with 4th and 5th generations; Not compatible with newest generation). Due to the shape this device is not nearly as mountable. It's made to look pretty on your desk.

4. Are 3 LAN ports enough? I have this in my office and I had to consciously decide to get rid of a device (my NAS) since I was going from 4 to 3 ports. That said, you can always get a hub to extend it but that goes against my minimalist philosophy.

If you have good answers to the questions above, you'll be able to get the most out of the device. Hope that helps!

I purchased the new 2TB Time Capsule the first day it arrived in the Apple stores. Set up was quite easy, even though I had existing routers on my network. The airport utility on my Mac instantly found the time capsule and proceeded to set it up. The first backup took most of the night to complete. I previously used a USB2 Hard drive to do my backups, and I knew that backing up over a network would be slower than a USB device, but I was surprised by how slow it was. Incremental backups seem to take about 10 minutes, where my USB drive was typically less than a minute. It seems to take some time to find the hard drive on the network, and then prepare the backup for download to the TC. However, I no longer have to keep my USB drive plugged in, and remember to properly dismount it each time I take my Mac on the road, so all in all I'm happy to live with the trade off of slower backups against the benefit of never having to remember to connect/disconnect my hard drive to accomplish a backup.

Overall I'm very pleased and would recommend the TC for anyone who wants a simple set and forget backup solution. It also seems to function quite well as an access point, with a very strong signal even when I'm on the third floor of my house and the TC is on the first floor.
