works well but is pricey.

I think this dongle makes the macbook much more functional--it permits charging the computer while providing a normal USB port (for charging something usually) and a second monitor, a much bigger monitor potentially. It is one of many Apple dongles I have purchased over the years, the most expensive one to date. But also probably the most functional one as well.

When I got the macbook, I knew its port thing was minimalist. I am not complaining about this, it's a great machine. But I am very happy to have an option to use a nice external monitor with it. I'm using an HDMI to DVI cable (amazon basics) to connect with a 24" monitor at its native (1920x1200) resolution at 60Hz. I'm not completely sure how to test, but since I can watch iTunes video fullscreen on the external monitor, it is very likely that HDCP is working.

To sum up my star rating--this is a five star dongle, but I am docking it a star for price. Google already has a much cheaper dongle (albeit one without USB-c power pass through. I know I am paying an early adopter tax, but my prediction is that in two years, when there are numerous cheaper, similar dongles out there, this Apple dongle will continue to cost $80. We know Apple charges a premium for their cables, adapters, etc., but for now there is no other choice but to pay it. So Four Stars!

Most solid one I found

Benson Leung didn't review docks yet, so I'm giving it a shot.

Short story: I found that the Apple branded USB-C dock works more consistently
than the other product I tried. The other one suffered from obvious issue routing
power.

The Apple branded one isn't perfect as it still doesn't provide any device power
with a car charger, but it is the best I tried so far.

USB-A and HDMI work as they should (only tried 1080p).

Long story:

I bought both the Apple branded and the Belinda branded USB-C docks.
Both with USB-C power in, USB-A out, HDMI out and power passthrough.

I tested both docks with these devices:
- Macbook (the USB-C super small one)
- Nexus 5x
- Macbook charger
- Nexus 5x charger
- USB-C car charger
- external 2.5" USB harddrive

Power passthrough for the Apple USB-C dock worked as follows:
- Macbook charger: yes, provides power to device
- Nexus 5x charger: yes, provides power to device
- Car charger: no power reaches device

Power passthrough for the Belinda:
- Macbook charger: yes, provides power to device
- Nexus 5x charger: no power reaches device
- Car charger: no power reaches device

So, the Belinda basically doesn't work at all with anything but the
big charger. Note that this applies even if your target device is the
Nexus 5x. You have Nexus 5x charger and Nexus 5x phone and the power
passthrough on the Belinda is not there, whereas the Apple dock works
in the same situation.

Sadly neither worked with the car charger. This validates what people
have been complaining about when they criticized those single-port
USB-C device with no separate power.

At that point I might have kept both, using the Belinda as a
stationary one just for the Mac.

Now, to make matters worse with the Belinda - if you connect a USB-A
harddrive (in my case a 2 TB 2.5" Toshiba) to the USB-A port, with the
Mac charger powering the whole combo, then the harddrive gets
insufficient power. You can hear it right away (clicking) I
experienced corruption and a final failure to write to the drive.
That is with the Belinda. I repaired the filesystem successfully and
completed the large write operation with the Apple dock, all other
things the same. This is bad.

I am keeping only the Apple branded one. Unless I find something that
works with a car charger I'll have to get another one later.

Superb Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter for the 12-Inch Retina MacBook Computer, with Impeccable Quality and Versatility

In order to make its 2015 12-Inch Retina MacBook Computer so exceptionally thin, light, and sleek, Apple was only able to equip it with one USB Type-C port, located on the left side of the computer. This USB Type-C port has the capability for receiving and supplying power (charging), for facilitating rapid data transfer, and for enabling projection to an external display. However, in order to fully utilize its capability for providing effective connectivity, this USB Type-C port does require the separate purchase of one or more adapters. One of the most useful and functional adapters that is currently available, is the Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter. This adapter provides three connections to the single USB-C port of the 12-Inch Retina MacBook computer, a USB-C charging port on one side of the adapter, a full-size HDMI port in the middle, and a traditional USB-A port on the other side of the adapter. The Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter truly serves to maximize the utility of the lone USB Type-C port on the left side of the 12-Inch Retina MacBook computer. It functions perfectly when used for charging, for facilitating the rapid transfer of files from a traditional USB-A flash drive, or for the projection of business or entertainment content to an external display. In addition, it features a minimalist and unobtrusive design, as well as very strong construction, which makes it a decidedly high-quality adapter, that is sure to be very durable. This Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter is an excellent adjunctive device for expanding the functionality of the USB Type-C port of the 12-Inch Retina MacBook computer, and I give it a five-star rating, along with my highest recommendation.

Overpriced, but functional.

UPDATE: It looks like the HDCP issue was been worked out. It's now a better device, but I do think it's overpriced.

This adapter does not support HDCP. This means you can't use the HDMI adapter to watch Netflix or other protected digital content. Yes, this includes TV shows and movies purchased via iTunes. Apple is known for tightly integrating their products and services, but apparently they're throwing that out the window.

If you want to charge your device while it's plugged into a monitor and a single USB device, or a powered USB hub, this will work. However, considering this is probably the first HDMI product to not support HDCP since 2003 or so, I have to say it's hugely disappointing.

(Just to be certain it wasn't a fluke, I tested the same monitor and cable with a MacBook Pro and Mini Displayport to HDMI adapter, and protected content played back just fine.)
