Apple iPhone SE
A big step for small
Welcome to iPhone SE, the most powerful 4‑inch phone ever. To create it, we started with a beloved design, then reinvented it from the inside out. The A9 is the same advanced chip used in iPhone 6s. The 12‑megapixel camera captures incredible photos and 4K videos. And Live Photos bring your images to life. The result is an iPhone that looks small. But lives large.
A beloved design. Now with more to love.
iPhone SE takes an incredibly popular design and refines it even further. Crafted from bead-blasted aluminum for a satin-like finish, this light and compact phone is designed to fit comfortably in your hand. A brilliant 4‑inch** Retina display makes everything look vibrant and sharp. And matte-chamfered edges and a color-matched stainless steel logo finish the look.
The most powerful 4‑inch phone ever.
At the core of iPhone SE is the A9, the same advanced chip that’s in iPhone 6s. With 64‑bit desktop-class architecture, the A9 chip brings you spectacular speed and responsiveness. And with console-class graphics performance, your favorite games and apps are incredibly rich and immersive. Making it a mighty chip for maximum performance.
The only camera you’ll ever need.
With a 12‑megapixel iSight camera, you can be sure to capture sharp, detailed stills like the ones shot on iPhone 6s. That includes shooting — and even editing — brilliant 4K video, which is up to four times the resolution of 1080p HD video.
Advanced security. Right at your fingertip.
Touch ID makes unlocking your iPhone SE simple and secure. After all, your fingerprint is the perfect password — no two are alike, and you always have it with you.

The SE has the exact same form factor as the 5/5s. If you're familiar with it, you know what you're getting. If you're not, and only know the 6 series, then you'll find the SE is a half millimeter thicker, but considerably smaller in area. It also has a more squared off shape along the edges, in contrast to the rounded edges of the 6. Look carefully at the product photos for the distinction. I find that the harder edges of the SE give me a better grip on the phone than the rounded contours of the 6 series, and of course, being smaller, it will be easier to grip in any event. I like that I can use this phone with one hand. My hands are just large enough that I could use the 6s okay with one hand, but the SE is much more comfortable for this. The display is also the same as the one in the 5s. It's nothing special, but it's a good, solid display.
The marriage of the SE's smaller size with the power of the 6s is the real advantage of this phone. Internally, it is for the most part an iPhone 6s, meaning an A9 processor, a full 2 GB of RAM, and most of the other bells and whistles that come with that added processing power, such as Touch ID. In actual operation, iOS 9.3 runs quickly and smoothly on the SE, and it's speed at performing tasks is indistinguishable from the 6s. The Touch ID on the SE is the version from the older iPhone 6, but I find it works just as well and about as fast as the newer Touch ID system on the 6s. Comparing to online videos of the 6s Touch ID speed, my SE is maybe just a tiny bit slower than the 6s, but it is also just a tiny bit faster than the 6. Graphics are also as fast as the 6s, in some cases measurably (but probably not noticeably) faster because of the lesser processing demands of the smaller screen. The rear camera is excellent, the very same 12 MP iSIght camera that's also on the 6s. It also takes Live Photos, as well as HDR photos, and can capture 4K video. Battery life is great. I can go for a day with calls, text, maybe thirty minutes of internet use, and an hour of gaming, and walk away with about 70% charge. Like the 6s, it also has Apple Pay, but I don't use it, so I have no comment about it. The WiFi specification has been upgraded from the 5s, and is now 802.11ac.
So, what are the tradeoffs? The 6 series, of course, has bigger screens than the SE, and in the case of the 6s+ the resolution is higher. The 6s screen did look better and appeared brighter to me. Likewise, normal two-handed typing is also easier on the 6s. I have to pay more attention while typing on the SE. Also, the SE does not support 3D Touch. For those unfamiliar with it, 3D Touch is a pressure sensitive screen input system that allows you to perform certain actions by the intensity of a touch on the screen. I personally didn't find it very useful, but others are quite happy with it. The front-facing camera on the 6s is quite a bit better than the one included on the SE; selfie artists and Face Time users should take note of this. The maximum storage for the SE is 64 GB, so anyone needing more will have to look to the 6 line. Evidently, the SE's modem does not include support for as many LTE bands as the 6s, and this may be in issue if you plan to use the phone in some foreign countries. Also, the 6s has MIMO WiFi so it should have faster maximum throughput than the SE.
Bottom line: this is a compact, easy-to-handle, yet really powerful phone. It's a big performance step up from my 5s. I prefer a phone I can keep for at least 3 years, and I think the SE has enough power that it will be able to run future iOS versions well enough for me to do that - time will tell. At least until iPhone 7 is released, the SE will give me a phone that's nearly as powerful as Apple's top of the line, but which I can easily put into my front jeans pocket (well, more easily than the 6s, anyway) and that's exactly what I was looking for.
Okay, there has been a hype for about a few months now, and the new 4" iPhone is finally here. Some important points to take note of are that this phone has the exact same body as the iPhone 5 and 5s. Literally the exact same. Unlike the 6s that was slightly larger than the iPhone 6, this iPhone will fit each and every case and screen protector made for the iPhone 5 and 5s. Really the only difference is that this phone comes with matte edges instead of chrome, and the legal labels on the back are removed.
The next point was that this phone is better than the iPhone 6 (and much cheaper). Don't let the 4" screen fool you, this iPhone's stats are mostly on par or better than the iPhone 6 (and no, bigger screen is not better). Take the resolution. 326 ppi, same as iPhone 6. A9 chip, better and faster than the A8 in the iPhone 6. If pictures are your thing, there is a 12-megapixel iSight camera, better than the one in the iPhone 6. Don't forget Improved noise reduction, also better than the iPhone 6. Don't forget the panorama that features up to 63 megapixels, you guessed it, better than the iPhone 6's 43 megapixels. Oh, and I almost forgot (not really), 4K video is a blast. For selfies, the iPhone SE now features Retina flash, or flash from the screen. Battery life: the iPhone SE has the best battery life of all iPhone for sale today in terms of internet use time.
So should you upgrade? I will start with those without a contract. If you hold any iPhone with a 4" screen or smaller, and you are free from any contracts, then yes you should upgrade. This includes current users of iPhone 1/3G/3GS/4/4S/5/5c/5s. Here's why. If you are without a contract, you probably paid more for your current phone than you will for this one. Given that you were able to afford a full price iPhone, you can definitely enjoy the features of this phone. The way I see it, this phone is the perfect way to enjoy an iPhone 6s without the huge cost (and the 3D touch).
iPhone 6 users, this one is a 50/50 call. You really should be happy with your phone, but, then again, I pretty much just trashed your phone in the specs throw down above. This one is a tough call, and one you and your wallet should decide.
Those with a contract, if your contract is almost over, rejoice, you can get this phone for free. But, since you are shopping on Amazon for this phone, I assume you are not in a contract. However, if you are still in a contract for a while, it is up to you to decide if this phone is worth breaking your contract over.
I hope you enjoyed reading this review more than I enjoyed writing it. If you have any questions, my email is on my profile page, and you should feel free to contact me. I, however, am not a representative from Apple, and you might just get better answers there. Who knows?
