For on the go, I don't take the iPod with me, but prefer the 32GB iPhone4 or even the Clip+ with a 32GB micro SD card. But at home, the iPod is the go to machine for music.
I bought this 160GB Classis from Amazon in 2010 and it has served me well - it holds most of my CD library (800+ CDs) and hundreds of downloaded MP3s. I can take my ENTIRE music library with me when I travel or go on vacation... and it fits in my shirt pocket. The problem for me with the newer iPod Touch is that it doesn't have the capacity (if I wanted an iPhone without a telephone I would buy an iPod Touch).
It is rugged: the all metal shell protects it well - has been bounced on concrete floor, fallen off the bed countless times, been battered, left in hot cars in the summer and left in freezing cars in the winter and it still works flawlessly.
Sound quality is superb. iTunes stores music on it in 128KB AAC which it claims to be lossless, and I can't tell the difference between AAC and higher MP3 bitrates using in-ear earphones.
If you can get your hands on an iPod Classic, do it. It's the best model of iPod ever made.
I bought a new VW which had an Ipod connection, and I can control and access this effortlessly from the steering wheel of my car, and it sounds very good. The interface with the VW is really well thought of, and it replaces a multiple CD changer in the trunk or under the seat or a (gasp) hard drive in the trunk. If you like music when you travel, insist on a car with an Ipod interface and get one of these. You won't miss satellite radio except for the traffic reports.
Previously, I had owned and still enjoy Creative sound devices. While I think the equalization in the Creative Zen is slightly superior to the Ipod (very slightly), elegance of design and compactness of the file structure give the final nod to the Ipod.
I'm a critical listener, but in an airport or while waiting for a meeting, it sounds really good over a good pair of headphones, and even sounds pretty good over my audiophile Sennheiser headphones.
I was sad to ship my old beloved nano back to be replaced, but I'm thrilled with the classic that I purchased. I get the original design that I love, with the added bonuses of extra storage and extra capabilities (video and podcasts). I guess that replacement nano is just going to have to work for exercising.
Definitely recommend the ipod classic 7th generation.
