From the front flap of this 317 page book: "This book brings together practically all that is known of the principles and procedures of creative thinking. Step by step, it formulates the practical techniques by which creative imagination can be more productively utilized. Its primary function is to teach the student to understand and apply his own innate creativity to all aspects of his personal and vocational life. The study of applied imagination as a formal systematized discipline is comparatively recent; the first course in creativity began at New York University in 1926. Since then it has been successfully taught at other institutions; and the Federal government is now financing a full scale study of creativity at the University of Southern California under the direction of Dr. J.P. Guilford. The functional methods developed here, with their emphasis on actual problem-solving, have been tested successfully over many years by leading educators and psychologists. Written by one of the outstanding authorities on creativity, [this book] paves the way to an inevitable and important development in democratic education. In an address at MIT, the author summed up as follows: I submit that creativity will never be a science - in fact, much of it will always remain a mystery - as much of a mystery as 'what makes our heart tick?'
