LL Book Reviews (Review by Susan Anderson)
There are some great characters in this book, and they are believable. There's humour, romance, suspense, woven into a story that is hard to put down. It's a well-written book, and it took me a long time to start suspecting who-dun-it. JJulieJ on Amazon
From the Author
Appraisal for Murder was a long time in the making. I finished the first draft in 2004, but thought "something" was missing. My "day job" life was quite busy, so I kept picking up Appraisal for Murder and putting it down after making only a few changes. By 2009, I thought I was closer to achieving my goal of creating a set of characters who had good senses of humor but also challenges in their lives beyond solving a crime. They are, after all, amateurs. I wanted a setting I liked (east coast beach town) and a career that would give Jolie enough flexibility and time to get into trouble (real estate appraiser). Thanks to a visit to my friend Barbara who lived in Ocean Grove, I saw a town that was by the beach without revolving around the beach, and Ocean Alley was born. Jolie is busy making it her own.

There are two more books in this series available on Kindle at the moment and I'm looking forward to reading both of these, and hopefully more of this series in the future.
Jolie has returned to Ocean Alley to live with her aunt after her estranged husband wiped out their bank accounts. Jolie is hired as a real estate appraiser and discovers her aunt's best friend murdered. When one of Jolie's former high school friends is arrested, Jolie begins snooping and finds herself entangled in her own troubles. I won't divulge too much of the plot, but the list of possible suspects leaves the reader guessing.
APPRAISAL FOR MURDER is the first in the Ocean Alley series and with each additional book, Elaine Orr adds layers to her cast of characters. One of my favorites is Scoobie, who matures throughout the series.
If you like cozy mysteries with plenty of punchy dialogue and witty humor, you will be entertained.
While this isn’t a fast-paced thriller, the characters are cute and the storyline seems to fit for a cozy read.
I wish the author had expanded more on the Scoobie character, since he seemed to be a little deeper than the rest, but maybe that’s for the next book. I also kept waiting for Jolie to decide she’d rather be a detective rather than an appraiser, but that didn’t happen either. It will be interesting to see what develops in later books.
The book includes a murder and a hit man for a loan shark, both of which involve Jolie and complicate her life more than it already is. The murder suspect is someone she went to school with and finds attractive.
There’s a bit of romance, some humor and some really likable characters in this book. I read it while sitting in the sun on my patio on Saturday and was just what I was looking for!
If you enjoy a lite, entertaining mystery, then you’ll this is the book for you.
