From two-time Pulitzer Prize–winning Washington Post national security reporter Greg Miller, the truth about Vladimir Putin’s covert attempt to destroy Hillary Clinton and help Donald Trump win the presidency, its possible connections to the Trump campaign, Robert Mueller’s ensuing investigation of the president and those close to him, and the mystery of Trump’s steadfast allegiance to Putin.

It has been called the political crime of the century: a foreign government, led by a brutal authoritarian leader, secretly interfering with the American presidential election to help elect the candidate of its choice. Now two-time Pulitzer Prize–winning Washington Post national security reporter Greg Miller investigates the truth about the Kremlin’s covert attempt to destroy Hillary Clinton and help Donald Trump win the presidency, Trump’s steadfast allegiance to Vladimir Putin, and Robert Mueller’s ensuing investigation of the president and those close to him.

Based on interviews with hundreds of people in Trump’s inner circle, current and former government officials, individuals with close ties to the White House, members of the law enforcement and intelligence communities, foreign officials, and confidential documents, The Apprentice offers striking new information about:

  • the hacking of the Democrats by Russian intelligence;
  • Russian hijacking of Facebook and Twitter;
  • National Security Adviser Michael Flynn’s hidden communications with the Russians;
  • the attempt by Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, to create a secret back channel to Moscow using Russian diplomatic facilities;
  • Trump’s disclosure to Russian officials of highly classified information about Israeli intelligence operations;
  • Trump’s battles with the CIA and the FBI and fierce clashes within the West Wing;
  • Trump’s efforts to enlist the director of national intelligence and the director of the National Security Agency to push back against the FBI’s investigation of his campaign;
  • the mysterious Trump Tower meeting;
  • the firing of FBI Director James Comey;
  • the appointment of Mueller and the investigation that has followed;
  • the tumultuous skirmishing within Trump’s legal camp;
  • and Trump’s jaw-dropping behavior in Helsinki.

Deeply reported and masterfully told, The Apprentice is essential reading for anyone trying to understand Vladimir Putin’s secret operation, its catastrophic impact, and the nature of betrayal.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Lucid and startling…a scathing portrait of the commander-in-chief’s personal and political failings, compounded by the dismal inability of other politicians and institutions to get to grips with the abundant evidence of Russian meddling….The book is the clearest account yet of what Russia actually did.” — Times (UK)

“We cannot understand what happened in the 2016 election, Russia-gate or the imploding Trump presidency by reading the 24-hour digital news on our phones....Fortunately, we still have a simple technology invented nearly six centuries ago: books. Greg Miller has written a damn good one.” — Kai Bird, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian

Greg Miller’s The Apprentice is a highly readable and coherent account of the Russian intervention in the 2016 US presidential election. While involving a highly complex series of events, he manages to make it understandable through a compelling writing style.

The book clearly shows that Trump’s presidential campaign was targeted by Russian surrogates seeking pro-Putin influence. The Russians spread massive disinformation during the last 3 months if the election, generating 8.7 Facebook interactions, estimated to reach over 125 million Americans. Estimates are there was more false news distributed on Facebook by the Russians than actual real news. While some may assert this disinformation had no influence on the election, it stretches all credibility to stick to that assertion (though the current president insists on doing just that). This type of pro-Trump “advertising” certainly had to have had an impact. Given that candidates and businesses spend billions on campaign adds, it is impossible to believe these Facebook and Twitter posts had no impact.

This book doesn’t produce a smoking gun in terms of linking Trump to this Russian campaign. There is no evidence that the President was knowingly and directly involved with the Russians. But was the campaign as innocent as they claim? I think that there were players like Paul Manafort, Michael Flynn, and Carter Page who knew exactly what they were doing. In terms of the President and his family, I suspect at best they were naive in their interactions with the Russians. The current president was so blinded by his lust for office that while maybe not colluding he at least turned a blind to those around him who might have been.

This book isn’t likely to change the minds of any of the President’s supporters. That isn’t its purpose. But if one seeks a coherent explanation of the Russian case and how it creates this current presidency, Greg Miller has written this excellent book to explain these events.

Greg Miller's "The Apprentice" is perhaps the best book I've read so far about Trump and Russia and the Subversion of our Democracy. It is so well done, it is not understandable to me why the book isn't just reviewed with five stars consistently across the board because he seems to allow for both sides while he writes. The fact that he won a Pulitzer is quite believable. Despite the reality that Trump's presidency causes me to feel anxiety more relevant because he seems incapable, "The Apprentice" was extraordinarily entertaining, and a masterful display of reporting and journalism. A treat! I'm happy he wrote it. Thank you, Greg.

A good overall book regarding the details and players involved in the Russian transactions leading up to the Mueller investigation. I read this book in October 2020; it was published in 2018. A lot of the details were already known to me. But this book does a very good job of summarizing the details that led to the Mueller investigation.

I've read several book about Trump (even one by Trump) as well as ones about dying democracies. This one stands out as having a coherent narrative about what was behind a lot of the news. If you have listened to all the news stories and wondered how some of them related to each other, this will help you get a better picture. It is well written and easy to read. Trump fans will, of course, pan this book for a variety of reasons. Unfortunately for them, everything has a ring of truth to it. Time will tell how accurate the book is, but until Mueller sorts things out, this book gives you a good sense of the history of the Russian election interference mess. This book is better than Woodward's "Fear" book because it is less a random series of behind-the-scenes vignettes and more an outline of related actions and events.

Two things stand out easily from the book. 1. Everything Russia did was to help Donald Trump get elected or to sow general discord inside the USA. Nothing was to help the democrats. 2. Rosenstein got his revenge for Trump's use of his letter to justify firing Comey -- he appointed Mueller as special counsel by skipping a meeting with himself, Sessions, and Trump and letting the other two find out he did it while they were meeting without him. Guess Rod works for the Dept. of Poetic Justice.

Depending upon your interests, you may like to read "Fear" or "Trumpocracy" or "How Democracies Die" or "Killing Democracy." Every one is a bit different and you can check out the reviews to see what you like. Personally, I'd start with the last book first.

Fantastically researched and very informative. We all live this day to day. However, Greg Miller takes the time to piece together all of the fragments and connect the dots. Some of this I was either aware of. But, this book filled in the gaps of things I was not aware of and drilled down further. This book is alarming and uncomfortable. But, it is very well researched and written, true to Greg Miller’s style.

This is one of many related books I have read. It is equally important to all of them. This and other author's offerings add perspective and depth through multiple angles. As with all that I have read it would not meet with current presidential endorsement. One author may speak of McCain or Clapper with differing reactions but none find anything redeeming for the current administration. Talent in limited fields is considered but not with anything truly positive movement for our country. As with all the books this author appears to be genuine, original and sincere. For this person I appreciate the causation of my multiple, varied reactions. The title is also 5 stars! The efforts of a misguided person in false values. The "great negotiator" unable to recognize value in timing. Leadership that even frightens your attorney's child!

The book falls short of Trump bashing, but provides a lot of information that leads one to doubt that the man can ever rise to any status of excellence as President. He is owned by his personal impatience, insecurity, incivility, need for devotion, and lack of ability to handle criticism. I wondered, however, what the title referred to: that he was an apprentice at a very difficult job?
