Approaching the Natural: A Health Manifesto Paperback – January 15, 2013
Enhance your purchase
In the years he has been a practicing nutritionist and health coach, Sid has honed an approach that makes achieving health and happiness a real possibility for virtually everyone. He has done this by addressing both the mental and physical aspects of achieving sustainable long-term health, and goes well beyond what any quick-fix diet/health plan can ever achieve. He passionately argues that health profoundly affects our happiness, and vice-versa, and applies his philosophy to nutrition, exercise, the mind, the family, and the world as a whole.
Approaching the Natural: A Health Manifesto is accessible, clear, edgy and humorous. Sid distills his years of research into a book readers will want to carry with them as a quick reference when negotiating our most unnatural world especially gen-x and gen-y’ers for whom there is a substantial lack of result-oriented health books that are this easy and actually fun to read.

1) The author's emphasis on taking small steps to make changes. Consistent small steps are often more impactful than one big change, which is something we often forget.
2) His detail on how the mind and body work together. In order to have a healthy mind, one must also have a healthy body, and vice versa. I have seen this in myself. When I become stressed, the first thing that happens to me is that I get sick. He elaborates on this point much more.
3) His writing style - Loved it because I felt like he was talking to me. There's no flowery language. He tells it like it is in a funny, informative way.
4) His emphasis on meditation, journaling, art, and being in nature - He gave some great ways to incorporate all of these into our lives
5) Resources and websites in the back of the book.
Here's what I found to be controversial:
1) His thoughts on drinking milk. His thoughts are that since no other mammal besides humans drink other mammals' milk, that it raises a red flag for we humans. In my opinion, we are the only mammals that drink milk from another species (ex. cows, goats) because we have the brains and technology to do it. Also, other animals are cannibals, but that doesn't mean we as humans should become cannibals.
2) Money. Buying superfoods, grounding sheets, and a really nice trampoline is expensive. I understand that there's no price tag for well being, so it's worth it. And, investing in yourself will pay off in the long run because you'll have fewer health problem. But, I can see how some people might be turned off by buying expensive food and simple pieces of exercise equipment.
