There is an epidemic of insecurity in society today. Many people suffer from an unhealthy need for affirmation. They are not capable of feeling good about themselves. For some the quest for approval becomes an actual addiction, as they seek self-worth from the outside world because they can't find it within themselves. Joyce Meyer understands the need for seeking approval from others to overcome feelings of rejection and low self-esteem. The good news, she says, is that there is a cure. Meyer, author of the million-copy bestseller Battlefield of the Mind plus more than 60 other books, addresses the constant need some people have for approval. This need stems from insecurity, which, in Meyer's own case and in the case of many others, arises from abuse—physical, verbal or emotional—sometime in the past. After years of struggle, study and attempts to live out biblical teachings, Meyer happily reports that she now lives for God's approval alone. For readers beginning the journey to recovery, she offers biblical exposition and sound—if unoriginal—self-help advice. The first step, she says, is accepting who we are and where we stand in God's eyes. "We must learn to think about and believe in our righteousness," she declares. The second step is facing our approval addiction and the feelings of shame, guilt, anger and unforgiveness that come with it. Finally, we must break our behavior patterns in the future. Meyer admits that she "will always be a type-A... in fact, most of the time I am type A+." Her writing bears out her self-assessment: it's strong, pointed, no-nonsense and even pushy. But Meyer knows what she's talking about, truly loves God and wants people, with God's help, to overcome their addiction to human approval. Her goal? "I want you to become addicted to Jesus!" This book was recommended to me by my cousin who is also a Christian. The author did a wonderful job presenting real life issues that often lead to approval addiction in a way that was easy to understand, and then backed her points with scripture. I also liked how she used her own personal experiences, this made the book very relatable. Often times we are scared to share because we feel nobody understands. By the end of this book, I not only felt hopeful, but empowered, and felt led to run to Christ harder than I already have. This book has empowered me to embrace all of it..good, bad, ugly, hurts, highs and lows because God can use it all.

I would have given this wonderful book a five star rating had Joyce Meyer NOT included a gross inaccuracy in her description of Mary Magdalene, the first woman disciple of Jesus Christ. On page 55 Joyce writes that "Mary Magdalene was a woman with a past. She had sold her love by the hour, she was a prostitute." This is not true and it was a mistake to include such an inaccuracy, one I was very surprised that Joyce had made. She apparently has never read the book Mary, Called Magdalene nor does she know the history behind this great woman. As noted in an issue of U.S. News and World Report: "Few characters in the New Testament have been so sorely miscast as Mary Magdalene, whose reputation as a fallen woman originated not in the Bible but in a sixth-century sermon by Pope Gregory the Great. Not only is she misidentified as the repentant fallen prostitute of legend, meditating and levitating in a cave, but she was not necessarily even a notable sinner. Being possessed by "seven demons" that were exorcised by Jesus, she was arguably more victim than sinner."

Otherwise there is much that is helpful in this book that should not be overlooked. For instance in the Introduction Joyce begins this book by explaining: "Many people are insecure and feel bad about themselves, which steals their joy and causes major problems in their relationships...Those who have been hurt badly through abuse or severe rejection...often seek the approval of others to try to overcome the feelings of rejection and low self esteem.....and use the addiction of approval to try to remove the pain. They are miserable if anyone seems to not approve of them in any way for any reason and they are anxious about the disapproval until they feel they are once again accepted...They need someone to reaffirm them and assure them everything is all right and they are acceptable....if a person is an approval addict, he or she will have an abnormal concern and an abundance of thought about what people think of them."

Finishing this book just prior to reading The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything: A Spirituality for Real Life authored by a Catholic priest, I saw important similarities reinforcing the fact that "The devil likes to remind us of what we are not, but God delights in affirming and reminding us of who we are and what we can do through Jesus....We are to look to Jesus,not ourselves....Insecurity stems from looking at our weaknesses, our flaws, and inabilities. Freedom from insecurity comes when we .... look away from all that distracts us to Jesus....Our faults will certainly distract us if we pay too much attention to them. We should confess our faults to God and trust Him to change us in His own way and timing."

In Approval Addiction : Overcoming Your Need to Please Everyone I particularly liked Chapters 4 (Changing Your Self Image), 5 (Loving Yourself), 6 (Overcoming Approval Addiction) and 8 (Pressing Past Guilt and Shame). Joyce is right on the mark when she states that "the root cause of an approval addiction is usually an emotional wound." She is also correct in concluding that "until we accept and approve of ourselves, no amount of approval from others will keep us permanently secure."

Some may criticize Joyce in stating that in the end she only substituted her addiction to God for an addiction to other people's approval. In Chapter 2, for instance, she states: "If we are addicted to people's approval, we will always experience pain when that approval is withdrawn--as it always is, at one time or another. However, if we look to God for our approval, we will never experience the pain of withdrawal because we have a constant, steady flow of His love and acceptance....We suffer much agony because we try to get from people what only God can give us, which is a sense of worth and value. Look to God for what you need, not to people." I personally do not think this way of thinking is so bad. People, being imperfect beings, can and will let you down. God never does.

Joyce in Chapter 4 also spoke of people who "derive their sense of worth and value from what they do rather than from who they are." She further tells us that "True freedom never comes until we fully realize that we don't need to struggle to get from man what God freely gives us: love, acceptance, approval, security, worth and value." He knows that we are so much more than what we do in life. As Joyce herself concluded: "what I needed to know was that I was valuable to God as a person totally apart from my position in life." Now those are words to live by...

I believe God presents His lessons to us when He knows we are ready to accept them and understand them. Until this point in my life, I did not know that I was addicted to approval from others. I always felt that I was doing the "Christian thing" by acquiescing to everyone else's needs. After reading this book, I recognized the "controllers" in my life and most importantly, I learned about myself, that I was not a bad person by saying "no" to those who were controlling me out of their own sicknesses. I prayed to God to help me press through the fear by quietly standing my ground when I had to; to give the lesson up to God for those who needed a bit of correction on by behalf; and to finally STOP the cycles of addictive relationships I was having with those close to me. I am left with feeling sane, strong and forever grateful to God.

I don't get much praise as a homemaker - who of us does? - so I habitually seek out getting that praise from trying to please everyone, instead of learning to be satisfied with pleasing God. His pleasure is, after all, most important! That's why I got this book, and although I haven't finished it, I've read enough to know this is exactly what this tired mommy needed to hear.
