I swear these recipes are like having my stepmother & my bonus Abuela im the kitchen! My bonus Abuela spoke very little English but she could tell us grandkids and step-grandkids (me) that she loved us. I was her little gringa mija (spelling?) her little white granddaughter who saw her maybe 1-2 times a year.

Abuela spent so much time in the kitchen when she was here making tamales and enchiladas with sauces to die for. She made fresh corn tortillas at every meal and made the lightest flour tortillas I have ever had! The first mole` I ever had was mi Abuela's. It was rich and spicy with hints of cinnamon and cocoa. It was unlike anything this little gringa had ever tasted and I loved it!

This book with its recipes and stories brought back a flood of warm and happy memories for me. Mi Abuela has been goe for many years but thanks to her recipes, and books like this with similar recipes, her memory lives on for me. It is a job well done, Teresa. Gracias!

Aprovecho: A Mexican-American Border Cookbook (Hippocrene Cookbook Library) is an excellent cookbook for anyone wanting to create delicious Mexican-American meals at home. Teresa makes border cooking approachable even for those, like me, who did not grow up anywhere near Mexico. Her recipes reflect deep family traditions and represent the kind of wonderful comfort food one would expect from Mexican-American home cooking. These aren't esoteric recipes involving hard to source ingredient, but doable meals anyone can master. Her approach is so conversational and friendly that it's like having a knowledgable friend cooking along side you in the kitchen.

I also appreciated that she pulled in recipes from prominent members of the El Paso community. The result is a cookbook that is not only a joy to flip through, but contains recipes you will actually make. Highly recommended. For more of her recipes and thoughtful commentary I also recommend her blog at: [...]

i got this for free last week and alot of times "free cookbooks" are not worth the time it takes to dig thru all the jumbled up and misspelled/omitted words!! this was a great surprise. it is well typed and interesting.of course, i see it is no longer free, but is almost $10. it has some very good recipes in it all though i have not made any of them yet. i am just glad it is readable. it has some stories and mexican phrases of popular sayings in america. i don't know that i would spend $10 for it because there are so many other cookbooks i would buy first, but it is nice.

I am very happy to finally have a useful tex-mex reference book that does justice to tex-mex cuisine! Although the recipes are a little different from what I am used to, everyone has their own tradition. Plus, it is well-formatted and easy to navigate. I do wish there were more pictures, though.

this book has a wealth of wonderful recipes but navigating through it is a pain. The table of contents is not kindle friendly and its difficult to navigate through . The stories are great and this book truly does have a lot to offer except for the formatting, otherwise I would give is 5 stars

I'm from El Paso and so I was very excited to receive this book! I love collecting cookbooks - especially ones with vibrant photos of the dishes. I am a very visual person and was disappointed to see NO color photos of the dishes. And very surprised to see how unusual the recipes are compared to what I grew up with. I'm sure the recipes are wonderful, and maybe one day I'll try one of them, even though they are so different. I did love the stories though and it brought quite the smile to my face. Growing up on the border is such a unique experience and it was fun to read the same stories I've been telling my friends for years. This book actually inspired me to write down recipes handed down from my mother and grandmother as well as the memories that come with them.

I first saw this book on the Kindle Fire when it was offered free. I enjoyed reading the recipes so much that I had to purchase a hard copy. There are so many tasty & easy recipes. I love it.
