Fantastic mini hub to extend the Zigbee range of Aqara devices
I have an Aqara temperature sensor and a remote switch on my backyard's bird enclosure. The temperature sensor controls the bird’s heater so it must be 100% reliable. The remote switch is used after I clean and bleach their water bowl. It flushes it with fresh water for five minutes. But both items were going offline because the Zigbee signal from the hub in my living room was not strong enough. So I needed to mount another hub outdoors for these two devices to communicate using the Zigbee protocol. But Aqara does not make an outdoor hub.So I mounted an Aqara hub inside a glass jar that I repurposed. Then I sealed the wire going in with a cable gland so that it was watertight.

I originally purchased this as the hub for my first few Aqara products but eventually upgraded to the M2 hub. Now this hub is in my “she shed” to enable me to use aqara smart plugs with temperature & humidity sensors to trigger my humidifiers on and off in my mini greenhouses.

You can’t beat it for the price and I’ve never had any issues out of it.

I bought this to give me remote control access to my U100 Smart Lock. I had trouble trying to add the unit in the app.

Helpful things I learned on Reddit forums:

Wifi: I have an Eero mesh system ( 6E-Pro units) So I unplugged all of the units except my main router and put the network in 2.4ghz mode during setup. This allowed the unit to connect to my wifi. I have had no issues with the unit staying on the network with the other Eero units plugged back in and 5ghz turned back on.

Homekit: I could not get the unit to add to the Aqara App. But once I added it to home kit it showed up in the app after about an hour. It also allowed me to bind my smart lock to the Hub.

This unit great cost-effective unit that just adds more functionality to my U100 smart lock which I am very happy with.

This was a bit tricky to configure. For some reason my door lock just wouldn’t sync and the firmware kept getting stuck while updating. It eventually updated on its own and has been working well.
Its kind of annoying that it’s a usb powered device, I wanted to just stick it with my network gear but had to get creative and find a power brick to use with it.

First I had the E1 hub, couldn't add it to my account/connect to network, so I decided to go with the more expensive M1S gen2, EXACT same thing happened. Cannot get this damn thing to connect to my network. Tried resetting it MULTIPLE times. Nothing works. Fails to connect. Then I saw this one line in the M1S manual (no mention of this in the E1 hub manual). "Wifi Name or password may contain special characters. Please replace them with normal characters".... REALLY, REALLY? Your device is the ONLY device I have ever come across that couldn't use special characters (most best practice security recommends special characters). In my Wifi password is ONE special character a "@". And this is preventing your product from working??? Why couldn't you just do a firmware update to correct the issue? So, I am supposed to reconnect every smart device in my home and reset them up with a new Wifi password, all because your ONE device cannot handle one special character? I rather just replace your device and return it and go with a manufacture that actually has the forethought to NOT make this a restriction.

I wasn't even sure if I needed this or not, but I bought it. It is not very expensive but it works extremely well. Since the light switches are repeaters and I have a few of them in the house, I feel like I have a pretty well connected Aqara Zigbee system. Once I get the M3 hub, I will move the location of the E1 hub just to extend the system a little further. But so far it is working very well.

Easy to setup with iphone but not Android. First time failed to setup after adding the hub to the apple homekit and it didn't continue binding to the app. Was very confused and I thought to give it a second try and it worked then. So i'd think not very user intuitive and reliable but at least iphone worked.

After then I was trying to add it to google home. Despite it says it supported google home, whenever I linked the aqara account it just says no devices found and it says it's a "temporary" issue. It asked me to wait for several minutes to retry. I believed it and waited for 1 day. Nope it didn't work. Tech support responded after I sent an email asking about it and they mentioned

"hub e1 and switch button cannot work in google home"

I don't think they mentioned this in the product page at all.

Well it is useless to have the switch button and hub then because I can't use it to control other lights.

So I initiated the return and accidentally found home assistant. I do have home assistant configured on my local server. Tried that and it worked flawlessly.

Overall I think it's ok and it works only if you do home assistant. Two stars off not because it's not working with Google Home, but because they never explained it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice device if you have 1 or 2 sensors to connect
Reviewed in Canada on November 19, 2022
My primary need was to connect a motion sensor to my sump pump discharge pipe do I could trend how often the pump was running from season to season. Really pleased with it, and the basic features of the E1 hub were just what I needed.

I have a Google WiFi home network with 2 AP's. Google WiFi supports dual band 2.4 and 5.0 GHz bands and each broadcasts the same network SSID, however to setup 2.4 GHz IoT devices using a mobile device can be problematic. This is because with Google Wi-Fi there is no option to temporarily disable the 5 GHz band and your mobile phone will always connect to the 5 GHz band if it can.

If you can get your mobile phone to connect to your 2.4 GHz band on your home router, than you are good to go, and you can stop reading. I've read some people had success by powering off AP's and going to a part of the house with poor wi-fi coverage and cycling the wifi on their mobile to fall back to 2.4 GHz. Did not work for me.

If you cannot temporarily disable the 5 GHz band on your router, the steps below should work for you too, but not necessarily for the faint of heart.

Work around, IF you have a 2nd mobile device handy, with carrier network and Hot Spot capability:

    1. Download and install the Aqara Home app on your mobile device. (Mobile #1)
    2. Temporarily power off the Google WiFi router and any Access Points (AP's)
    3. Turn off some of the wi-fi devices in the house that may be heavy Internet devices, such as TV's, video games, streaming devices, desktop and notebook computers. When you enable the Hot Spot on the 2nd mobile phone (next step), any active wi-fi devices will connect to that Hot Spot phone as well. They will consume your mobile data and impact your Hot Spot performance.
    4. On a 2nd mobile phone (Mobile #2) with carrier service, setup the HOT SPOT with the exact same SSID and password as your home network. When you enable Hot Spot on a mobile phone, it broadcasts on 2.4 GHz band, which is what is needed to configure the Aqara hub.
    5. Enable the Hot Spot on Mobile #2.
    6. Ensure Mobile #1 connects to the Hot Spot network. Likely will connect automatically.
    7. On Mobile #1 proceed to setup the Aqara Hub device as per instructions in the app.
    8. Once all done, turn off the Hot Spot on Mobile #2 and rename the Hot Spot name (SSID) to something other than your home network. Just so you don't create a network SSID conflict if the Hot Spot is turned on in the future.
    9. Power on the main Google WiFi router and any AP's
    10. Power back on any devices that were disconnected in step 2 above.

The Aqara hub and all home devices should now be connected to the main home network as expected. You may need to power cycle some devices to get them to reconnect to the home network. You can now install and setup any IoT sensors to your Aqara hub.
