I am very active in the aquarium hobby and the AquaClear 50 (all models I have tried) are just awesome. What I find most attractive about these filters besides the fact that they function flawlessly with very little maintenance, is that they have seperate media replacement parts. You can customize your personal AquaClear to your needs. Personally I use two filter foams instead of one and one carbo insert. You can always add the carbon insert quickly and easily if needed.
A few bits of advice:
1) Use a pre-filter sponge over the intake for added biologocal activity as well as preventing small fish or shrimp from getting sucked into filter
2) Regularly (once a month) shake/squeeze both the pre0filter sponge you put on as well as the media from in the filter in water you JUST REMOVED from your tank when doing your regular water change. DO NOT rinse the media in tap water ro use hot or cold water period.
3) Once a month, unplug and unscrew the motor housing and remove the impeller and use an old toothbrush or cotton swab and clean both the impeller and the impeller housing.
These AquaClears are workhorses and the ability to tailor the filtration to your individual tank makes them invaluable.
5 starts on this one!

This filter sponge works with the Aquaclear brand of aquarium power filters. This one is specifically sized for the model 20/mini. Unlike your typical power filter media, this one can simply be rinsed and re-used instead of replaced. This money-saving design is perhaps the best feature of the Aquaclear system.

This foam block is made out of a material that will not wear out in a typical aquarium environment. However, if you have a tank that produces a lot of debris, say if you keep plants like Java Moss, it is possible to get the foam clogged to the point that it will take a lot of work to get all of the debris out. At that point, rather than spending all of that effort, you may just be better off replacing the sponge.

Why 4 stars instead of 5? In my opinion, the coarse design of the sponge media allows too much smaller particles to get through. By that, I mean that it is not as good as clearing cloudy water as a floss-type filter media. The Aquaclear design also seems to allow more water by-pass than most of its competitors. This is a review of the filter sponge media, however, it is hard to review this without taking the design of the whole filtration system into consideration.

Now, what can you do with your clogged filter sponge after you've decided to replace it with a new sponge? You can rinse out and use it as a substrate for your plants. For example, if you go to your local pet shop and view the plants, you will find a lot of them now come in small, sealed, plastic bags. These plants were grown using tissue culturing, and they come to you rooted in a gel medium. This method has a lot of advantages (no snails, algae, or parasites hitchhiking on the plant!) to you.

This is one of the best filters i have purchased ,my current filter is stll functioning so i added this one and run both a the same time . The 3 component filter that can be disassembled and cleaned and reused if you choose to , has made a tremendous difference in the clarity of the water that my thow away carbon-mesh filtes could not acheive . I have large fish and this double system works well for me and extends the time between cleaning for both , also the rate of water flow can be adjusted quickly which is nice when feeding and serves as a backup if either stops functioning, i have to partialy lift the suction tube on my old filter to slow it down when feeding . I am sure this would function well as a stand alone filter when sized properly . With it's adjustable water flow you could upsize the filter and this would extend the time between cleaning and allow greater flexibility if adding more fish . The cost of supply's is very reasonable and it runs quiet .

I've been using these in my tank for about a year now. When it's time to change the foam insert I cut it in half and only change out half. This way I don't mess with the biological filter too bad. I take my aquarium bucket, syphon out some tank water, take the old dirty sponge and squeeze out the dirt, take my half new sponge and squeeze it into the dirty water to seed it with healthy bacteria. My ammonia and nitrites are at constant zeros and my nitrate level is at 10ppm. These foam inserts work great. If this review has helped you at all please let me know. Thanks!

Its foam, it's Hagen, and it's cheaper than local. I'd suggest not changing it as much as they say, run some tank water into a bucket and with gloves squeeze out the dirt/poop, then put the filter in the tank water, dump that bucket and repeat. Just keep it wet with dechlorinated water, that keeps your bio filter active. Do the same with the pellet bag.

The Aquaclear aquarium water purifier system is the least expensive system I have found. I have a 30 gallon tank and use the AquaClear 50 filter system. Since I have less than a dozen 2-4 inch fishes the cartridges last easily for 3 months as shown by a water analysis. I am please with the system. I use the foam, ammonia, and charcoal layers.
