This book may be a little bit dated, but it is an excellent book. It has so much information that is practical as well as easy to grasp and read. Definitely an excellent addition to your reef aquarium library. I would definitely recommend this to somebody who is just getting into the hobby or a seasoned person. But they probably already have it in their library.

This book is a must-have for anyone truly interested in keeping domestic corals and their kin. It is a steal for the price, and filled with excellent images. It contains superior taxonomic and nomenclature information, making it easy to understand which animals belong in which genus. It helped me identify many of my hitch-hikers. It includes toxicology of the animals, including their threat level to aquarists and other animals. Vivid diagrams on octocoral and stony coral anatomy (and words in bold print) make it a bit like a text book.

One of the best aspects of Aquarium Corals is its universal appeal. Those new to the hobby will find as much joy as experts. Charts help beginners learn orders, suborders, and families. Collection impact, symbiotic algae species listings, and natural location keeps advanced aquarists interested. This book even has a map with all common collection sites and recipes for making coral food!

The bulk of the book focuses on the various species of cnidarians, but also provides an excellent brief history of coral classification and research. There is an in-depth discussion of diseases as well. True to form, it provides a wealth of information about nitrogen cycles and common filtration practices, temperature and salinity, and the various trace elements, plus conservation threats and efforts. The real treat is the corals, however.

It's a great book. Buy it; you'll like it!

This is a fantastic book for the beginner and advanced marine reef aquarist, or really anyone who is interested in coral - an organism that devotes 90% of its body to having a mouth. This book details common and uncommon aquarium corals, diseases, infestations, and in many cases gives a short history of the life of coral in the aquarium hobby. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is thinking of growing corals or has some already, even if you're advanced enough to frag your own corals without hesitation this book will offer you some insight or knowledge.

The pages are thick and heavy weight, the colors are bright and vivid which is invaluable when dealing with something as diverse as coral. It is easy to read, broken into understandable segments, and uses plain language to help out the beginner.

This is without a doubt one of the best purchases I have made for my home library of saltwater aquarium books.

I guess the fact that this book, at the time of this review, has received nothing but 5 star reviews-says it all. Easy to read and completely understandable, with loads of pictures to show you just what the author is talking about. What I liked most about the book was the author's honesty throughout. He clearly says which corals will most likely live and which ones will usually die in our tank. And never seems to be 'selling' a product or idea as so many other books in this industry do. The section of husbandry is worth the price of the book itself. No where else have I found more complete guide to increasing my coral population without spending mega-bucks on new specimens. The corals in my reef tanks have never looked better, and are growing like weeds. I've even been teaching the owner of the local fish store a thing or two about the corals they sell.

Wow. This book was recommended to me by members of a couple of different online reefkeeping forums, and I was not disappointed when I got it. It's an utterly comprehensive book, giving so much information that it's almost an overload. In fact, that's pretty much the only downside. The book reads like a textbook (in fact, if I were taking a college course on captive reefkeeping, I wouldn't be surprised a bit if this were one of the major texts), and that makes it a little cumbersome for the average or casual reader. On the other hand, given the complexity of the hobby and the constant attention reefkeeping requires (there's really no such thing as a "casual" reef aquarist...), maybe the level of detail isn't a bad thing after all.

Excellent pictures, incredible detail in the text, and an all-around great value, even though it was a little expensive as books go (though not nearly as high as some of the other recommended books...). Definitely worth the money, and a valuable reference for all- people just starting out (like me) and people who have been at it a while who are looking to increase the depth of their understanding of the hobby.

Excellent info on both the care and natural life of corals.

I gaurentee you will learn pertinent info even for the seasoned reef keeper. This book got me to add an alternating wave machine to my tank and I already see a difference in my corals health. I also purchased a grounding probe per advice given. Similarly it tells what we DO NOT need and are wasting money on.

The text if on the scientific side and reads like an intro premed biology/ zoology text. For those not wishing for this level of info it may prove daunting.

Far and away the most comprehensive book I've read on the aquarium hobby. YOU OWE IT TO YOURSELF AND YOUR CORALS TO READ THIS BOOK!!! Will more than pay for itself if it saves one coral or you decide not to purchase it because now you'll know what does and does not belong in your system.
