This is the famous Java moss, which probably needs no introduction. It is easily the most popular and easy-to-grow live moss in the aquarium hobby, and it is also one of the most beautiful. This is a 5 by 5 inch section of moss, which is enough to start 4 to 6 patches that will grow out quickly. This moss is particularly ideal to keep with dwarf shrimp. We ship a bit of this moss with all of our dwarf shrimp because they like it so much. If you breed fish, the fry also really appreciate the plant cover.
Java moss also removes pollutants from the water, greatly reducing the need for water changes and preventing "smelly tank syndrome." NOTE: You may receive some strands of moss that are yellow or brown in color - this is normal and the moss will recover within 2 weeks.

I needed some extra hiding places/cover for my baby Red Cherry Shrimp, and this was immediately perfect for them. So perfect that I'm buying a second lot for my other tank!
This pictures are in a 100-gallon aquarium, and is minus a small clump I took to add to my son's 10-gallon aquarium. The first picture is looking at it from the front, and the second is angled down at it so you can see how wide the clump of Java Moss is, too. Please excuse flake food in the moss and the distortion in the second photo because of the glass/angle. I took the picture just after feeding my fish.
My son also said that the plant was "awesome" when he saw it in the big tank. He can't wait until his small piece grows to be big, too. He's 4. :)
Fast forward to 3 weeks later, and they’re starting to turn brown. I do a 50% water change, add some fertilizer to my planted tank and just let it be.
Then after a month, I decide to introduce some guppies and shrimp into my take. This is when all hell breaks loose. These peach colored fuzzy mucus type blobs start appearing all over the place especially hidden in between the gravel. I decide to do 40% water changes every week and clean my gravel 2 times a week. No matter how meticulous I am, these mucus type blobs keep appearing, and now my ghost shrimp have those same blobs but inside of them. Weeks later, they all start dying and my fish are also struggling to survive. At this point, the java moss is entirely brown and smelly. In summary, I suspect I should have never trusted the java moss with the white specks. I should have just thrown it out because it caused total chaos in my tank. Those specks were either bacterial or mold. Either way, it wiped out nearly all my livestock. Needless to say, I threw it out and I’m going to have to drain my tank and start all over again.
I am also very pleased with Aquatic Arts. They deliver fast and in healthy conditions. I have already placed more orders with them. I trust them and their products. I would recommend them to everyone.
The moss was bright green and very healthy. The piece was larger than advertised too.
The photo I have shared is the moss piece after 1 month in this 3.5 gallon tank with low light. No unwanted critters or algae have shown up.
I am so happy with this purchase!
The Java Moss arrived in a small Tupperware like container, I had ordered a dwarf lobster and some shrimp that arrived in the same box, all of which was packed wonderfully. It seemed like a very generous chunk and spread out much more than just 5x5.
I have some on the sand on the bottom of my tank and some on a piece of driftwood. Overall I'm super happy with my purchase. I would highly recommend Aquatic Arts to everyone.
