I got the Aqueon 00455 18-Inch Floramax T8 Fluorescent Lamp, 15-Watt and it works great. It's interesting because with this bulb the tank seems darker as compared to the 8000K full spectrum, but that is because the Floramax emphasizes the reds and blues which the plants need.

I bought this light for my 30g tank that is heavily planted, before I had a full spectrum bulb that was way brighter the plants did well with it but after it burned out i tried this bulb my plants have tripled in size (about a 4 month span) and my amazon swords started to propagate like crazy and the babies are almost the side of the "mother" plant which are now mammoth in size also my Cryptocoryne have also produced babies that are shooting out from around the plant. My java fern also has made babies and leaves got fatter all my slow growers started growing very fast and my fast growers (java moss, water wisteria) have gone insane! im just glad i have friends with fish tanks so i can give them some plants or else i wouldnt know what to do with this underwater jungle! I just wish the light was a little brighter it is pretty dim i saw that people said it looks pink not mine it looks blue to me and my neon tetras really pop out, their color is so vibrant they also seem to like it better the fish swim about more, instead of hide when the light is on dare i say this light might be too good? either that or i just need a bigger tank :P

UPDATE : this is my 3rd java fern they get too big for my 30 gallon and I sell them this light is a great light and continues to make mammoth size plants FAST!

Yes it works better than a 2-year old bulb. The light is very dim, my tank looked a lot darker than before. Some of my plants liked it and start to grow again although very slowly. Some plants are still the same. I purchased a 20W to replace this one, it's a lot brighter now.

As others have said, it's not very bright, but my plants love it and with a couple accent LED strips, my tank is gorgeously lit.

Might be fine for a 20 gallon long tank, but my deep 29 is awful dim with this bulb alone.

I purchased one of these from petco (Side note cheaper here). I didn't do much research because I trust Aqueon and have never had any issues with products they have living up to expectation. Well again I was not at all dissapointed, I had a dying amazon sword, a struggling Anubis, a penny wart and another I forget what it was called that were not doing well at all under my old aquarium light (it was a standard 20 watt bulb from a company I had never heard of it came with the tank.) I shelled out the doe and put this in my lamp and holly betta fish was there a difference. I went on vacation for 4 days came back to a flourishing tank with fresh buds new growth and roots out the wazzoo I had to trim back the penny wart due to its explosion. My tank is more colorful and more beautiful than ever and the only change was this little bulb. I highly recommend it for any planted tank.

It turns on, and that's about it. Although the name is Floramax, it did not stimulate or produce any plant growth in the time frame I had the bulb installed. The light added a wonderful vibrancy to my tank, and really highlighted the various colors of my fish, but I wasn't thrilled about the plant growth. I ended up taking it out and buying a new light (Coralite 10,000K), which my plants seem to be responding to a little bit better.

I don't regret my purchase, I've lost a lot more money on worse things, but I'm just not really impressed with what I got. It could be the type of plants I have, or my tank depth, or a mixture of several things, so I wouldn't let my review sway your decision if your heart is set on this light. For me, it just didn't work.

great looking bulb. I needed a second bulb and didn't want to make another trip to the pet store.
This is the exact model that the pet store has and was a perfect color match to the one I had purchased elsewhere. It looks much better than my old lamps and brings more vibrant colors to my fish tank

The light is so dim that I can barely tell that it is on! After one day, the bulb started flashing. After two days, the bulb burned out. I've learned my lesson and will be making the trip to the fish store from now on.
