When I first plugged it in, this pump was LOUD. It was annoyingly loud. I could hear it from 25' away in my basement. After moving it around, turning it off, on, etc... taking the impeller out, I was about to give up on it, that is how loud it was.
I decided to ignore it for a couple weeks. Now it is pretty silent. I cannot hear it over my protein skimmer running, so it has definitely quieted down significantly. I would suggest waiting a few weeks for the new pump to break in before returning for replacement.
It's been running for a month or so now and so far so good, I cannot comment on longevity yet, but I would buy again.
Update; I forgot about the bad pump and tried to use it. Electrical sparks came from inside the water and burnt smell was emitted. I pulled that pump and put in the other and everything worked as advertised. Throwing away bad pump this time.
