Excellent intro to St. Thomas Aquinas, the 'dumb ox' -- so called because he didn't speak as much as write. This book was recommended by a Roman Catholic (Opus Dei) priest which says a lot as this particular priest specializes in 1:1 spiritual direction to other priests and bishops. In particular, the book makes an effort to place St. Thomas in the contemporary world of US academic philosophy -- explaining why mis-representations have occurred and can be corrected. St. Thomas Aquinas's writings are vast -- and Thomistic thought is very much relevant in the battle of ideas against the "dictatorship of Relativism," predicted by Cardinal Ratzinger.

It's not easy at all to pick up Aquinas' Summa and dive right in. Someone without too much experience in philosophy will likely have problems with all the language he uses - form, matter, essence, existence, act, potency - since he doesn't offer a comprehensive introduction to these concepts. Further, Aquinas' language often takes different meanings than we expect today, since the meaning of these words (like matter) has changed since almost 1000 years ago. This book is excellent in helping the modern reader get into Aquinas' frame of mind. Strongly recommended.

Superb summary of a tough subject. Aquinas is an incredibly difficult thinker to grasp, so I was a little intimidated when a friend recommended I should read Aquinas's work. Thankfully, Feser's short but dense book does an excellent job of providing an introduction to Aquinas for the layman.

Reading Feser's book will also give you a solid introductory grasp of the traditional Christian positions on metaphysics, reason, logic & the history of the church. Really enjoyed it.

Tell me the Ways

As with other reviews, this is an excellent book, particularly good on getting the reader to enter into the ways of thinking in an Aristotelian universe first, and then handling Aquinas within that. It is slanted towards arguments and counterarguments in philosophy, rather than theology (though obviously that is part of the grounding and outcome of the arguments). It is pretty much the best current exploration of the battleground over the Five Ways discourse. It is, however, to be very clear, in no way "A Beginner's Guide" -- there is a lot of heavy lifting here, done elegantly, but still.

Being new to St.Thomas Aquinas, and indeed, new to philosophical thought and literature in general, I found this work to be accessible, well-reasoned, yet still refreshingly challenging. Mr. Fewer explains concepts thoroughly and understandably without "talking down" to the reader. I will definitely be picking up Mr. Feser's other books, and diving into the Aquinas' Summa better prepared than before.

For someone looking to really get a better understanding into Aquinas/Aristotelian metaphysics this is a great intro. Contemporary philosophy usually breezes over the metaphysics of Aristotelian tradition as being outdated and this beginners book provides a great look into the reality of the school of thought challenging prejudices against the ancients and scholastic.

Excellent summary of the five ways

I have picked up the summa theologica A few years prior, but I wasn't ready for it, I think Feser portrays Aquinas objectively and thoroughly in a brief introduction.
