Dr. James Maxwell Miller is Professor Emeritus of the Candler School of Theology of Emory University. After retiring from Emory in 1999 he spent ten years as archaeologist on the staff of Fernbank Museum of Natural History. Among biblical scholars he is best known for books and articles on ancient Israelite history. Among his books are The Old Testament and the Historian (1976), Israelite and Judean History (1977), and A History of Ancient Israel and Judah (1986; 2 nd ed., 2006), the last two co-edited and co-authored respectively with his Candler colleague John Hayes. Among archaeologists Dr. Miller is better known for directing an archaeological survey of the region of ancient Moab (in present-day Jordan). The results of this survey, conducted between 1978 and 1983, are published as Archaeological Survey of the Kerak Plateau (1991).

From 1980 through 2014, Dr. Miller directed an annual Middle East Travel-Seminar. Through this METS program he introduced Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt. Israel and Greece to more than a thousand seminary students and lay people. From 2007 through 2019 he served as consultant to the Macedonian Ministry Foundation and directed its Holy Land Pilgrimage program for mid-career pastors.
