Editorial Reviews

Review

“Convinces through the sheer breadth of sources analysed. Rylkova proceeds to demonstrate how the unique combination of a vibrant cultural legacy, combined with the loss of the environment in which it thrived, became a projection space, unprecedented in scope, for hopes, dreams and interpretations.”
—Europe-Asia Studies

“An impressive feat in synthesizing Russian literature over the century from the 1890s to the 1990s.”
—H-Net Reviews

”Galina Rylkova’s excellent and much-needed book explores the myth of the  Silver Age in Russian culture . . . fascinating . . . a work of love.”
--The Russian Review

“Thought-provoking and richly documented. A highly engaging study.”
—Slavonic  and East European  Review

Format: Paperback
This book is jarring its treatment of the silver age poets and very much in the spiteful spirit of the times. If you write poetry, if you love poetry, if you feel passionate about expression.. this is not the book for you. Expect a meticulous dissection of the human spleen served up on an academically precise platter.

Every human being is flawed. The question is, to what degree is the exploration of those flaws justified in understanding the artist? Rylkova lost me as she hung Akhmatova's dirty laundry from her line. I found myself looking over Galina's shoulder at each piece of Anna's soiled underwear, and wondering why on earth I purchased this book.

Should we extend our tabloid sensitives into the remote past?

Perhaps, but let's put a health label on this little bottle of poison.

Thank you, but no thank you.

Dr. Galina Rylkova is an expert in her field and this book attests to this. She provides insightful, new perspectives on the Russian Silver Age, which are a must read for both scholars and people who have an interest in Russian literature and culture alike. I myself am no scholar, so my expectations upon receiving the book were for purposes of education and interest. Having known some basic Russian history and literary figures, I was expecting this book to broaden my horizons. It most definitely did so and then some. What she argues in The Archaeology of Anxiety surpassed anything I could have imagined, and I can never think of the Russian Silver Age the same again. Dr. Galina Rylkova is simply brilliant and her work should be read by anyone who has an interest in her field.
