Editorial Reviews
Review
Benjamin Adam Saidel, East Carolina University
"In this beautifully produced volume, Jodi Magness provides a superb introduction to the archaeology of the region of ancient Palestine, and creates a focus that is somewhat different from the usual presentations of 'biblical archaeology' … This book is an invaluable overview and full of Magness' characteristically sound and insightful judgements. It will be much used by students and scholars."
Joan Taylor, Strata: Bulletin of the Anglo-Israel Archaeological Society
"The book is written by an expert on the topic who has participated in major excavations herself. It is well written and contains a wealth of images. It is a valuable aid for scholars, students and all interested non-specialists alike."
Journal for the Study of the New Testament
"It shouldn't take very long for the reader to recognize that a career's worth of knowledge has been condensed and organized into this outstanding textbook - [Magness] had wanted to write this book for 'more than twenty years'. Like a good wine, we ought to be grateful that the author waited to serve this information to us. The work is extensive, covering as much information as possible, yet it is organized as to be accessible, providing the reader with succinctly written sections. Students will benefit from the breadth of data provided. Instructors can be confident that their pupils are getting a more than adequate introduction to the subject. In fact, anyone who is interested in the topics this book discusses will benefit from reading it."
Brian Leport, Ancient Jew Review
"… the publication of The Archaeology of the Holy Land is yet another feather in [Magness'] fedora, one that archaeology enthusiasts - specialists and non-specialists alike - will want to have available on their bookshelves."
Ralph K. Hawkins, Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society
"Jodi Magness has an unrivalled reputation for scholarship in regard to the archaeology of this extended period and an ability to convey its results attractively to a wide audience, and both qualities are paraded here to good effect."
H. G. M. Williamson, Journal of Jewish Studies

Nevertheless this book is disappointing. The title, subtitle and cover image give it away: the archaeology of Palestine and Transjordan are entirely subsumed and sacrificed to a reframing in ideological-biblical terms (the Zionist claim on all of Jordan, past and present, in part stems from the fact that for a few years, the Transjordan was attached to British Mandatory Palestine till a separate political solution was found).
This book is the written equivalent of the State of Israel's policy of systematically appropriating and subsuming the archaeology of the entire region to the state ideology of Zionist "Israel." The author simply replaces "Israel" with "Holy Land" (a clever move, for it widens here target audience: fundamentalist Christians will like this book as well).
The photographs are pretty; the maps and text are largely inconsequential and bland (apart from a few specific topics in which the author has been deeply involved as scientist and cannot entirely peel of that scientist and sceptical skin). the thousands of scholarly controversies the text touches upon remain almost entirely unmentioned, biblical chronology is simply accepted as given. Two souls, with Goethe, dwell in her chests and the one soul, the one dwelling inside the Platonic cave, here completely overshadows the other, the one that seeks the light.
Read this book! It's Jodi at her best. Read it a second time, like I've done, and it will help you understand everything you've wanted to understand about the Holy Land and the archaeology that goes on there by dozens of great archaeologists from around the world.
My wife and I would marvel with delight each evening with one new discovery after another regarding the historical figures, customs, architecture, geology and geography of Jerusalem and Israel. Each chapter of the book builds upon the previous chapters and it is not a "fast paced" novel. This is not casual reading.
However, if you have a genuine curiosity regarding the history of ancient Israel and Jerusalem and are willing to take the time to dive in and *read* the book, you will be immensely rewarded with a deeper understanding of the key personalities, common people, customs, geography, architecture and events of the ancient "Holy Land." Highly recommended

Inevitably with such a complex subject there is some repetition but the style is a good blend of the readable and the erudite.
