"An entertaining, wild ride of the imagination set in present-day Albuquerque." --Spencer Beckwith, KUNM radio
"Dan Darling is a bard of the baroque and broken... Like a chimera, the story effectively blends noir mystery, speculative fiction, and even elements of dystopia into a fascinating literary menagerie." --Thomas Maltman, author of Little Wolves
"Archaeopteryx by Dan Darling is an ambitious book: the scope of the story, the seriousness of the themes, and the melding of disparate genres bring to mind similarly ambitious postmodern efforts by Pynchon or Wallace... it's a work of hard-boiled magical realism that never loses sight of real-world stakes." --Muskeg Magazine
About the Author
Dan Darling is a native of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Before becoming a writer, he was a comet rocketing around the world in long, haphazard parabolas. While traveling through twenty countries and many states, Dan made his living as a circus performer, bartender, café manager, IRS agent, graphic designer, and magician. In his prime, he spoke Swedish, Spanish, and Mandarin and has studied half a dozen other languages. Dan received his BA in English from the College of Wooster and his Master of Fine Arts at the University of New Mexico.
Gravity having reined him in, Dan settled in Minnesota, where he labors over novels that fuse the language of noire detective fiction with the imagination of magical realism. His greatest influences are Haruki Murakami, Salman Rushdie, and Raymond Chandler. Besides working on novels, he teaches writing and literature at Normandale Community College and is an avid bowler. He lives in the Twin Cities with his wife and daughter.

The beautiful combination of New Mexican local flavors, people and surroundings is breathtaking. This combination plate works. I call it weird, funny, highly compassionate, grotesque, strangely icky, alluring and magical. This book is dedicated to the people of New Mexico and I, for one, appreciate the work of a fellow traveler. The location is brilliant, but the hard-boiled style is even better. The verbal exchange between characters is to be emulated.
This is the first book of a trilogy and I’m already looking forward to the next two installments. So, get writing, Darling! Don’t make me wait. I get grumpy when I wait too long.
I've enjoyed reading the book so much that I'm almost done but I don't want to finish
